I just received an Email from a seller of a 73 SG..I love Fenders but i also have a passion for old SG's..Anyway i simply asked the guy before bidding if he had any documentation from Gibson verifying the serial number.I also asked if he would be willing to guarantee the guitar as original..I also asked about over all condition and a couple other things concerning shipping.. The guitar was listed as is which i found a little strange as we are not talking about a $200 dollar epiphone..
He writes me back going off on me asking me if i know what as is means and since i only have 73 transactions on ebay i need to learn how ebay works .. He also goes on to say that the reason the prices on ebay is cheaper is because of the risk you take when buying a guitar and that i must be a moron for expecting anyone to offer a guarantee on the authenticity of a 35 year old guitar...Because he has no control of who i would get to verify it..Then he writes that he has over 600 transactions with very low negative transactions..And who am i a person with only 73 transaction to question him..
I'm not sure what i did to set this guy off..As when i wrote the original email i even stated this is not a reflection on you but you can not be to careful now days due to the rash of counterfeit guitars on ebay..Im not sure if this guitar is a fake or not..But i do know that this guy is lacking in his communication skills and i don't want to deal with him on a purchase of a guitar that could cost a couple grand or more,,,,

you should post this and the ebay link on the Gibson SG forum.
They really know fake from real

And they are very agressive with fakes. They pretty much create a email storm to ebay, seller and Gibson..

If it's real they'll know just by looking at it.

I never buy anything on e-bay. To many rip-offs and scams.

Why not forward this to the people at e-bay and file a formal complaint against the person for being a complete idiot.

...and at least add a link so we can check it out too - that's part of the 'ebay scam' fun!

What you did to set him off was catch him. I had the same thing happen with a Mustang that some clown had advertised as a Shelby. He made comments like "Do you even know what a Shelby is?". Of course, he had no idea I'm in the business and have been to the Shelby facility and done work for him. People like him are just looking for the first sucker to come along and you weren't it. That's why he's acting like that.

I have thought about this..I don't want to make a big deal of it but i can't get the bad taste out of my mouth about this guitar or this guy's reaction..There is the possibility that the guitar is authentic and the seller was just being an A#$..But i wouldn't be able to forgive myself if some new guitar player flipped out $1700 (starting bid) or more on a fake..I just can't figure out the guys reaction if i was trying to sell something fake or real i sure wouldn't blow up on some one for asking questions..
I have re read my original e-mail over and over again trying to figure out what could have been so offensive to cause him to hit the roof like this...If i was a selling my 71 Strat the questions i asked would be the ones i would expect from a serious buyer...

Hi Invader.CC: we had a similar situation here once before. Forum user Windwalker was getting a bunch of agro from an Ebay seller, so several of us decided to pose as interested bidders and ask that seller some questions about his auction. From the responses we got it quickly became clear that the guy had genuine mental health issues - so much so that I and I believe a couple of others began to regret going after him.

There's all sorts out there in cyberspace. At a distance there's nothing we can do to help the unhinged ones: we just have to leave them to stew in their own sauce.

And don't buy their guitars, obviously.

Cheers - C

Shame on you for expecting him to do anything other than sell you a bogus guitar!! I've only bought one guitar on Ebay and had a very good experience, but the more I read about the horror stories the less likely I am to ever do it again unless it is a seller I have bought gear from before.

Post the link, i'll be happy to send him some questions and get him riled up though, it's the least we can d to help out with a potential seller of bogus goods. :D

I can't find it on ebay. He must have sold it or took it off.

The only thing I can add is this:

It is my opinion that as a member of the guitar playing community we have the responsibility to report these questionable ads. It is through our camaraderie that we can avoid being defrauded.

if you have time to kill, there are several examples on this forum where we have banded together to help other members ferret out the truth about some sales.

I think we are duty bound to report the scammers, as by doing so we help protect our fellow musicians from them.

That don't surprise me..After thinking about it ..I contacted the seller again saying i was sending a copy of the E-Mail to e-bay for them to investigate the guitar and decide if it was authentic..I never actually went through with it but i guess the threat was enough to get him to pull the add..I will go back and look to make sure its been pulled..If it hasn't i will send all the info to E-bay and let then decide what to do about it...

Invader you did nothing wrong in your pursuit and everything right. I have asked the same questions to sellers 2 or 3 times and they are more than happy to answer. So many guys dont understand the meaning of mint so you have to run it down like this-Are there any dents, dings, chips, scratches, stress cracks in the neck joint, buckle rash, worming, how are the frets and has the guitar been modded in anyway. This is how I start out every pursuit of a guitar I am after if it is listed as mint or NOS and 30% of the time I will get -after looking over I found a small ------. This guy was selling a fake as I checked completed listings and the guitar is not there, so he took it down. Dont let this turn you off from buying on ebay though as I have scored so many great axes on it. Anyone who was straight up would have been glad to answer any questions you threw there way as they are looking to sell, and will even offer more pics upon request. Dont forget you are covered by paypal if the item comes as not described in the auction. Just last month I posted a Frampton Les Paul a guy was selling that was a fake and he had over 300 transactions and a 100% rating. I wrote and told him his guitar was a fake and he took it down and was saying how he got duped and how nice it was he was going to hang it on the wall. Iwas thinking more along the lines of bullsh!t as he was not as pissed as someone who got taken. I would try and stay clear of Gibsons anywhere on the web right now unless it is an established store as they are too risky. But keep checking out for a bargain as there are a lot to be had.

I share the same opinion. This is no reflection on eBay itself as an organization, but far too many people out there are unscrupulous and there's no way of policing it.

We musn't forget what happened to our friend Vinny Pop!
