Both use single pickups, but which one seem to taylor to classic rock type tone?

Check out a little video I did...excuse my attempt on playing a Black Crowes tune....playing by ear of my head.

+1 for the SG, for this type of playing. ie classic one-dimensional sounding rock.

I think it's easier to play on an SG as the darker p90's cover up a lot of the players individuality. The Fender single coils are much more expressive IMO and need a higher degree of musicianship to really make them sing.

BTW, these are my two favourite guitars i own (a Jeff Beck strat and a Voodoo SG) so I am not partial to one brand or the other.

It seems like Gibsons in general are a little easier to play since the guitar is shorter scale. The P90 pickups are incredible, but I agree strats are much more expressive. You really have to work to get a strat to sing. They are feisty little creatures aren't they?

Yeah! But I prefer the Gibson scale. Hard to decide what to get to replace this old Squier - I like both tones, Strat and SG, but the SG seems more inviting because it seems easier to play. On the other hand, Strats are Strats. And Gibson just put me down with the Hendrix thing.

I love the way an SG sounds but I never liked the way it felt in my hands just something about it never clicked with me. I feel the same way about a Jazzmaster to.

agreed, it is a great sounding guitar in most cases but the shape and feel of it never really worked for me when I played one. I say go for a Strat!

I think Gibson should make a 25.5" scale guitar... I'll bet it would be a good seller.

I have one of each and they're my #1 (Strat) and #2 (SG). I like the SG sound when I need it (classic 57 pups) but i find it a little harder to play because of the shorter scale - the strat just feels more natural to me.

I love my Strats..I have switched to Strats in the last 7 years prior to that my main guitar was an SG...As my music style changed so did my choice of guitars..IMHO for a Straight 70's rock sound there is no better guitar than an SG..I have always preferred the SG over the Les Pau.. Even though there are things that a Les Paul does better than a SG for overall use i feel the SG is better except for may be in a recording studio..
If i was going to play rock and rock only i would go with an SG..With that said if i was going to play a couple different genre of music it has to be a Strat ..They are far more versatile guitars ...With the option of a Fat Strat with the humbucker in the bridge position it has even made the Strat that much more versatile...I love my old vintage SG's and they sound great but today it is the Fat Strats that i go to the most...

BG65, In my younger dumber days I always associated fender with either surf music or country music, so my first good guitar when I got the money was a Les Paul Custom. I loved it and still do, but a long time ago I saw a Cherry Sunburst Strat in a music store and it looked so nice I just had to try it. After playing it for just 10 minutes I had to have it, it felt so good. My suggestion play them both and see which one you like best. I have my Gibson and my Fender, but if I had to have just one guitar it would be an HSS Strat because you can cover a lot of musical ground with it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Both are spectacular, inspired, thoroughbred, time-tested instruments, and a decent player can get veritably any guitar music on earth out of either an SG or Stratocaster.
