I don't have any string trees on my new Custom Shop NOS 56' strat. I have vintage staggered tuners. I love the way it looks without a string tree. I don't know the answer to your questions but I know this topic has been discussed before so you should be able to find some great posts. Here is a pic of my headstock without string trees.
