Hi all.

I always thought that Fender uses Shaller tuning machnes on Am Standart guitars and Ping tuners on mexican standard guitars...until today.

Few months ago I bought geniune Fender replacement tuning machnies P.N. 0990820100 "Am.std.guitar tuners.chr". Those were slightly different in look than stock tuners on MIM Standart. Logo was different (nicer) also shape of the knob was different also they were staggered. All of them looked the same (despite staggering) - the same nicer logo than on MIM's Pings, the same knob at all tuners, the same dimensions, and had the same 1:16 gear ratio. Also tops of the part where you put in the string was nicely polished.

Pings are not polished on the top, have, not so nice logo, slightly different knobs in shape. Very slight differences in dimensions. Also Pings are 1:18 and Shallers 1:16 gear ratio.

Today I got another set of the same replacement Fender part for my second project guitar. I found that two Tuners for E and A string (which are not lower in staggered set) were looking completely like Pings, also have different logo, different konb shape, are not polished at top and have 1:18 instead of 1:16 ratio as other. 4 tuners are for sure like shallers that I got previous, but two of them looks like MIM Standart Pings (I have 12 of them now and I can compare and say that for sure two tuners out of 6 are Pings!).

What's going on? I thought that maybe someone put two Pings in that package at the shop but I looked at few brand new Amercan Standart guitars and two of them had 4 Shaller like and 2 Ping Like tuners. They are slightly different but they are! It's very bad that Fender does that. I uderstand that maybe Ping Tuners are good and in staggered set, tuners for E and A can be Ping cause they have the same height an very similar shape/dimensions. But it looks very bad for someone who look closer at his guitar and there are 2 tuners form one manufacturer and 4 tuners from another with slightly different logo, dimensions, and finishing.

Also shaller for me is very reputable parts manufacurers. If Fender puts on package with replacement parts badge "Made in Germany" I suppose these was made in germany by Shaller and are better than Taiwanese or Korean made Pings. Shaller tuners always were better from far east products.

Does anybody found that? Especially Am Standard Guitars with two different tuning machines types on it? For me it's unacceptable to cut costs in that awful way

I also just bought part #099-0820-100 tuners and am not happy with the differences in the appearance of 2 of the tuners from the other 4. I'm not sure what company makes which tuners, I just wish they all looked finished and that they all looked the same (aside from the staggering of course). Unfortunately they seem to be the only non-vintage and non-locking tuners that Fender sells right now.

Since my last post on this subject I have learned that it is possible to buy Fender tuning keys like the ones on the MIM guitars. They are sold individually. The Part # is 003-742-9000. I'm assuming they are made by Ping, but who knows. So far I haven't had a problem with the Ping tuners on my other guitars. Since they aren't staggered I'm hoping they will all at least look the same as each other and all be made by the same company.

I'm posting a photo of the posts of the "American" staggered tuning keys for Stephen.

I contacted customer relations to find out more info

Me: I would like to enquire which company makes the Tuning Machines on the American Standard Statocaster

CR: Schaller or Ping manufacture the tuning keys for this model.

Me: how would one go about de-terming what i have it is an 09 American Standard Stratocaster, E & A tuners are taller and non block heads, simply would like to know so if any are ping i can replace them with Schaller.

CR: They both look identical, you can’t tell the difference. You have staggered tuners which is standard for all AM Stnd models.

Me: ok, simply i want to use Schaller tuners rather then ping tuners and wanted to know what i currently have so i can decide whether or not to buy some Schaller tuners.

CR: There is no way to tell, they are both made to the same spec and same tolerances. There is no difference between the 2. Reason for this is b/c we have them make it to our spec.

Sounds like double talk to me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

40.99 at amazon dot com to get the Fender schaller locking tuners !!!
