That's what he named his guitar? And I thought "Blackie" and "Brownie" were unoriginal! This is the "Friends Episode" version of guitar naming.

OK I am officially going to soften my stance on John Mayer after having a long talk with a good friend and ace player about him. As I have stated many times I think the guy is talented but his playing does not blow me away to understand all the fuss about him. Well this is not the 60s the 70s or the 80s when the talent pool was very deep. So if John Mayer can turn on a young audience to the blues and blues based rock then I have to tip my cap to him in that respect as there are not that many young guys out there that can pull in the masses like him. But I still have to stick by my original review of his first album with the trio that I was let down as I thought it would be more high octane but maybe he has that one in him yet. I still think Kenny Wayne and Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks have it over him in the chops depo. I just hope these 83 guitars are not hung on the wall like a clock by a bunch of collectors.

You and I are of like mind however, I don't feel he's really turned anyone on to the blues. That's a side bar of his, not unlike a great dessert after dinner at Peter Luger's. Of course, only a few around here may understand the analogy, but what the hell. Like guitar players, there's more than one great steak house on this planet.

agreed, his fans are turned onto more crap rock like his music and not the true blues. there are some new school blues guys out there who are amazing but mayer isnt one of them, IMO of course.

see i think it is more because his fans build him up as this guitar god, and when I listen to him (regardless of the style of music being played) I just don't hear what all the hype is about. he is a good guitarist, but these guitars are obviously being made because of his POP appeal, not his playing skills. Agree to disagree though, really don't want to waste anytime arguing about this guy.

Up to now, I've always remained neutral on the Mayer debate. I enjoyed his work during his Trio phase but the more mainstream commercial stuff doesn't do it for me. He has also been a big influence on my son's playing, so I give him props for that. But now, in case there's any doubt as to where, musically, he will be heading next, this from a recent Rolling Stone article about his upcoming new album:

Musically, “Who Says” accomplishes what Mayer says he set out to do on his follow-up to 2006’s soulful and introspective Continuum: Make a pop album, or “a record where you could sing any of the songs in an American Idol audition,” as Mayer tells RS.

American Idol, huh? Oh well...

Doc I just figured if all the young cats out there are going to pick up a guitar because of him and enjoy what he is doing and then might look back at some other blues players so be it. To keep it real there are not many young guys who can reach an audience the size of what he can. Joe Bonamassa and Kenny Wayne have it all over him in the chops department and Joe has a deal with Gibson and if Kenny did not derail with personal issues for a few years I think he would be top dog as he was even on a G3 tour and you know you need great chops to play with those guys. I still dont know where Mayers heart is in his musical direction but I figured I would tone it down a bit but if this was any other decade he would not be mentioned amongst the top players. By the way speaking of Lugers they are my favorite and the only place that actualy makes me crave spinach.lol I lived right down the block from the Methodist Hospital and still hang in the $@!&# as my mother still lives there. Embers on 97 and 3rd is another fave of mine but I just hate being squashed when I eat .lol
