Hi:

I really need help.
I'm from Chile and I bought a Fender Stratocaster MIM 2007 Nº Series:
MZ616XXXX and I need to replace a damage fret (11th).
Guitar specs from Fender page said 21 Medium Jumbo frets, but there's
a lot of Med/Jumbo Frets sizes. What is the exact size?

Please. I can't find that info.

Ps: Sorry about my English :D

Hi Ozzy, welcome to the Forum.

I have the tools for accurately measuring frets and I could go and do that for you on some medium jumbo Fender frets and tell you what answer I get. BUT: as you say, "medium jumbo" can mean different things on different guitars. My frets might not be the same as yours.

So, two options. A good luthier/tech should be able to measure the fret using digital calipers and then use that information to source an exact match.

Alternatively, send an email to consumerrelations@fender.com and ask them the question. They may be able to provide the correct answer.

Good luck - C

Guitar specs just said med/jumbo.
I'll try with a luthier.

Oh - did they not give you a helpful answer?

I'll be perfectly happy to measure the medium jumbo frets on my MIA Strat for you if it would help. But they may or may not be the same frets used on your MIM. So it might not be useful.

But let me know if you want my numbers...

Cheers - C

Greetings to Chile!

The fretwire on a 2005 American Series (MIA Standard) guitar of mine measures

2.69mm / 0.106" wide
1.1mm / 0.043" high

It is very hard to measure the tang when the wire is on the guitar, but from the edge it looks to be about 1.44mm / 0.057". That tang measurement is not reliable though.

Remember, this is after it has been levelled and crowned at the factory, of course. We don't know how high that fretwire was before it was installed.

I don't know who's fretwire Fender use these days, so it is hard to find an exact equivalent. Someone else (maybe Forum user cvilleira) might be able to tell you which model of Dunlop wire that equates to.

Comparing it to Stewart-MacDonald's wire (which you could buy mail order) it is closest to their "wide/medium" or maybe "wide/highest" model:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_su ... twire.html

If I was trying to match the wire on my guitar I'd take the "wide/highest" from that page, because you are going to lose some of the height during levelling.

But your guitar may be different.

By the way: all of this does indeed show that names for fretwire are not much use. What Fender calls "medium jumbo" seems to be similar to Stew-Mac's very biggest wire.

Does that help at all?

Cheers - C
