Hey there,

Didn't the Fender website have a link to where you could check your serial #? I seem to have spent about 2 hrs. trying to find out what kind of strat I bought and I'm still stumped. I bought this Strat at a flea market and need help IDing it. It is a black on black Strat with the Serial number starting in ic, followed by 9 digits. The headstock is exactly like the pics of the 70's reissue strat. It does not say weather it was made in the US, or anything else. Any ideas??? :?:

Thanks, I am getting a broken link. If it is the same one that is on these forums before, I tried it and could not come up with anything. In fact, I did not find any info on a serial number starting in "ic" at all.

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html#serial

I(XXXXXXX) = Limited number of these "I" series guitars were made in '89/'90.
They were made for the export market and have Made in USA stamped on neck heel.

Thanks for that, I saw that but I have not found any info on serial numbers starting with both "C" and "I" together. I've searched everywhere including Fender books. This is starting to bug me... :x

Managed to dig this up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squier
Almost at the bottom of the page it talks about serials beginning with IC
Only reference to IC as the start of a fender serial I've been able to locate so far seems to be for these squires.

---------------------------------
Squires by Fender made in Indonesia Cortl had IC as the start of their serial

The serial format would have been ICddxxxxxx
I = Indonesia
C = Cortl
dd = year
xxxxxx = count

Ahhh....it would have helped to know we were talking about a Squire. Good catch man.

Well, if I would have known it was a Squire, I would not have bought it. The headstock says "Fender Stratocaster" and nowhere on it do the words "Squire" appear. I noticed the information on the net about the Indonesian and Cort references too. Anyway, thanks for the replies. :evil:

Hard to say, it may not be :(
The serial may be one of the many odd ones that have shown up over time.

All the Squires I've seen so far are stamped big letters "Squire Strat" and Fender under that in small text on the headstock.

Yea, same here. The only reason I bought it was cause it had the "70's" style headstock graphics with "Fender Stratocaster" on it. I think that it may have been made in Indonesia by Cort, but who knows. Oh well, I'm having fun playing it!

You only bought it for the Logo? Did you play it? I'm assuming you did, but there's generally a huge difference in sound between squires and official fenders, pretty cool if this one sounds awesome!

Well no, I didn't just buy it for the logo. I wish I had money to throw away like that. It sounds good and plays awesome. What I meant was that I had only seen that logo on the 70's strats and that made me pick it up and play it in the first place.

Not sure about your instrument, but mine is identified less by the serial number and more by the letters on the headstock that read F-e-n-d-e-r.
When I came to realize that, then I KNEW I had a great guitar !!!

(SORRY !!! ... It's Friday and the beer is flowing strong !!!)
