The price they gave you was a fair one for a set up so just take the drive and get it done. So many guys on the forum are wizards at modding and setups also building there own axes that I think they tend to forget what it was like to be kind of clueless.lol You do not sound sure of yourself so why take a chance tinkering just go have a pro do it and also tell him how you like your action and guitar to play. The Fender specs are just a guide everyone likes things different.

is the action much easier with the bridge flush?
or does it create it's own set of problems with the strings now hitting frets?

Doesn't matter if it's flush or floating there are screws to change the height of each individual string. To clarify what I said before if you have a gap the strings are going to be raised but you can then lower the string at the saddle. Leo did a great job when he designed the Strat, it's very "adjustable".

sorry for 'dumb' questions, but what would be the advantage in having the bridge flat with the body?
Is there a sound difference?

Just so you know I have mine flat against the body and I don't think there's any advantage to it. The only con I can think of is that you can't do reverse dives.

Some people say yes, some people say no, some don't care.
