what is the big deal about accidentally touching the fret with the scotch brite? I mean I wont excessively scrub it but do i really need to cover each fret with tape?

Also, heres another kind of question, would refretting it with larger frets help for being able to grip the strings better when bending?

Sometimes when I bend a string on the 52RI tele, the string will actually slip from under my finger, especially if try a bending vibrato. This doesnt happen on my les paul which has larger frets

1. Touching a fret with some scotchbrite might not be a big deal, but, if you are going up and down the neck, you'd be best off NOT touching them, just in case you might accidentally wear one down more than another, which would then require a fret-leveling and re-crown. If you are careful to keep your smoothing "in between the lines" then you'd probably be OK. However a $2.50 roll of pinstriping from your local Auto Zone and 10 minutes or so masking them off would be good insurance against needing a leveling and recrowning.

2. Larger frets will put more space between the top of the fret and the fingerboard which would probably help with the issue you've described. But probably so would lowering the action some (which you might not be able to do because of the radius of the fingerboard)

Okay, I will definitely pinstripe it first, and I do plan on getting a scotch brite pad.

Do you think you could post a tutorial on youtube, or maybe over a webcam if you have the cabability, or direct me to a video of this whole process being done. I dont trust my own hands

My strings are actually really low on the action which makes it easy for chording and fast scale runs easy, but my fingers slip off the string when bending or vibrato bends. I think raising the action up a bit would help on the bending problem becuase it would give me some room to get under the string but I would have to deal with the higher action especiall when trying to play around the 12th fret.

When the action is to high my fingers feel like a football player trying to high steo through the rubber tires lol

Umm, doubt if I'll be able to make a video of this procedure for you, as I don't plan on doing it any time soon, if at all. What I would do is to tape off the frets and then cut out a peice of scotchbrite slighlty narrower than the space between the frets. You could just keep cutting down the same peice, I'm not suggesting you go out and buy a case of scotchbrite or anything. I would then across the fingerboard between each of the frets to lightly "rough" up the surface a bit. This should take out some of the "stickyness" you referred to. To change your action, you could raise each saddle post 1/2 turn and then re-tune. See if this helps. The idea is to not go too far at a time. I've found that when you change your action, either from going between guitars or changing it on your one guitar, it takes a bit of time to adjust your technique.

http://www.scotch-brite.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Scotch-BriteBrand/Scotch-Brite/Products/Catalog/?PC_7_RJH9U52300V2E0I02BK7KM0GT3_nid=RWGDPNXX08gsBBDGVJTLBMglJC3NXJH2HPbl&prodID=RWGDPNXX08gs&lang=en_US

This is what I use on the back of my necks. It does not have soap inpregnated in it like some of the dishwashing products. I forgot they even made all of the stuff they do. I believe this is the original Scotch Brite product, but who knows. It's called a "Heavy Duty Scour Pad"

OKay thanks for taking the time and helping me out thoroughly.

Have you ever done your actual fretboards as well as the back of the necks on your guitars?

Can ya post pictures of your guitars for me and all of us to look at?

I will generally polish the lacquer on maple fingerboards of the guitars I do with some polishing compound before taping off the fretboard to do the fretwork. I haven't used scotch brite on a fingerboard personally. All of my guitars get it on the back of the neck though. I really don't think I should post pictures of my builds on the Fender forum. There are some pics on my website, as well as contact info. There are also probably some pictures on the strat-talk forum. If you want to contact me, I'll send you some more pictures if you wish. Cool? No problem about the advice, my pleasure. Hope it works out for you. I'm with you though, I really don't care much for maple fingerboards.

One of the reasons I prefer rosewood.........(besides, I also like the look better).

One thing to think about, is something Mr. Kemmery said in one of his posts above:
Clean your guitar. i have a buddy who used to complain about a sticky neck all the time. He had oily skin. he never wiped down his guitars after playing.
After we made him clean them, he never had the problem.

A side note, this same buddy was banned from playing all my guitars except one. his sweat was potent, even if i wiped the guitar down immediately after he played his sweat would destroy my nickel strings. I had one of my Floyd Rose equipped guitars set up with stainless steel strings, and they were OK, so he was confined to that one.
