Going to be buying my Highway 1 from an online retailer. Checked my local shops and the prices are higher plus the tax is another reason. I would really like to buy from them but not at the price differance for the Highway 1. There are so many online retailers like GC, Music 123, Elderly, ZZounds etc. and the price for the Highway 1 is about the same with all of them. Looking for opinions on an honest retailer to purchase from so I would appreciate your positive opinions on who you have had good buying experiances with. Thanks and I appreciate your opinions and help with this. :)

Topps, my one caution to you in buying a guitar online is that you won't get the chance to play it until it's in your hands- yes, the online retailers have a return policy, but I know myself when I bought all but one of my guitars, I must have played at least a dozen of the same model until I found the one that "fit" me. And having to box up and return a guitar or anything for that matter is a pain.
My suggestion would be to go to your local retailer and show him the prices of the guitars online- then let im know you will buy from him if he can match the price- I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

I found sweetwater to be OK to deal with.
http://www.sweetwater.com/

* BUT * I would never buy an instrument on-line sight unseen.
Same with my cameras (I am a photographer by trade)
For any delicate expensive items, I want to handle and try out the one I am taking with me when I leave!

Then there are no surprises when the box is unpacked, and all the potential shipping back and forth if there is any trouble. :)

Consider that guitars straight from the box are usually not setup. If you don't know how to setup the guitar yourself, the cost of the setup should be considered when making your decision. I think a good setup is around $50.

If you do buy online, Musician's Friend has a good return policy if things go badly. All of the pricing should be about the same. I believe Fender discounts 30% off of there MSRP, but I haven't checked it in a while.

My GC doesn't have the greatest selection. That's why the online stores interest me.

Based on strictly purchasing and customer service, if I do any online buying, I do it from American Musical Supply. Fantastic Customer Service. I purchased a guitar and was given a faulty tracking number. After a couple of days I called them and they sent another guitar UPS Red at thier expense. Then, within 2 days I had 2 guitars. I called them and they sent me a pre-paid UPS label to send one of them back. When I was given the wrong info from the UPS guy on what to write on the label, I called AMS and they sent someone to recieving to double check that I got credit for returning the guitar.
Buying online has its pitfalls, but if I am, I will do it from AMS. The only downside is that sometimes thier selection isn't the greatest.

Hope that helps.

First, Thank you to all who responded to this. I really appreciate your input. Still checking a few local stores but still a price differeance. I found out that Elderly Music sets up all guitars before they ship them and inspects them. Their price is the same as all others so I am waiting on a reply from them. Other considerations would be AMS or Sweetwater. Thanks again. :)

I've ordered from all of them and truly have had no problems with billing, returns or damaged product. I think you're in good hands with most of the biggies. If you ever just need tech help, Sweetwater has some real brainiacs on staff and can probably answer any question you could throw at them.

I have been to the Elderly store in Lansing, what a neat place, and staffed with knowledgeable and very helpful folks. I was going to say before your last post that I would bet they would do whatever set-up and prep you might ask for, they are a top notch outfit and I would recommend them for the personal service you will get.

I have sent an e-mail to Elderly a few days ago concerning a Highway One and so far no reply. Guess they are too busy to answer mail from a possible customer. Oh well, I will explore other sellers and see if they respond.

I beat online prices at my local GC for both a Stratocaster and a Blues Junior. The Stratocaster was about $200 less after paying the tax for buying locally, and they gave me a hard case. We loved them so much for it that we went back and bought the Blues Junior from them a lot closer to list, but still $51 less than online prices I could find. So, even after taxes the Blues Junior was less expensive at the local GC. Maybe you can look around and find a local GC that wants to beat Sam Ash? The people working at this GC were young musicians who knew guitars and amps, let my three year old play a drumset, and shared their knowledge and let me know about going tube with a Blues Junior, which worked out really well.

For me the best online retailers are:

Gruhn

Elderly

Wildwood Guitars

Sweetwater

All of them do a good job and have great customer service. Gruhn, of course, is a guitar knowledge god.

It's true what you say. The manager at my local GC is always willing to talk price and I've walked out with a couple of good deals.
