Can pickgaurds be painted pretty easily? Or at all? One of the designs I have in mind for a guitar would require that I paint the pick gaurd. So I'm just wondering if this is something that can be done by myself or not.

If it can be done how would I go about doing it and what would I use for paint?

I'm no expert by I would think that you'd be best off buying a clear pickguard and painting the underneath part with some kind of acrylic.

I tried to paint my pickguard once (Hendrix style) and I discovered two things.
1. I can't draw or paint anything that even remotely looks good.
2. Do not use spray paint on a windy day. Luckily the chair was white and so was the paint...

But it is possible, if you aren't artistically challenged.

I used Krylon Fusion to paint one of my pickguards black. It was recommended in an older post. Basically, it works best if you take your time. I did several thin coats of spray over a two day period and gave it another 3 days to dry. The instructions on the bottle says it dries in 15 minutes, but it takes a lot longer than that to prevent finger smudges.

did it have a gloss finish or a matte/dull finish?

It's a gloss finish, but not as glossy as my regular black pickguards. It's just a wee bit duller, but still has a nice shine to it. I'm not sure if Krylon Fusion comes in Matte or dull finishes.

I forgot to mention that when you do your painting to make sure you do it in a dust free environment. I had to make sure I kept it away from my dog as it was easy for a hair to get stuck in the wet paint.

Of course they can be. Jimi's Monterey Pop Strat was a perfect example.
