JACSTRAT

I have the same book mate. I found Sharon Lawrence to be a excellent writer. I particularly enjoyed the way she wouldnt take any crap of JH when he was using heroin and caught smuggling the stuff.
Her whole attitude was 'ok so your THE guitar player, get over yourself and start living in reality. Do something to help yourself'.

When Al Hendricks won his Jimi's estate I thought, 'Great were not going to get a new album every month Thats a horrible bootleg and Jimi wouldnt have wanted anyone to hear'. Jani has done just that though, consistently released stuff Jimi would be embarrassed with. The good recordings/bootlegs of his stuff with Curtis knight are all but lost to history as are the Buddy Guy/Jimi bootlegs.

Wasn't it Sharon who had the Woodstock guitar which she ultimately sold to Richie Fiedler?

I appreciate the response you folks had to my post. I too feel that Sharon Lawrence is a great music journalist from what I read in her book on our hero and great American icon Jimi Hendrix. I feel she was truly hurt more than the rest of us even more, simply because she did know him as a friend, and not just as a musical celeb that she wrote about. I need to do a little more reading on Jimi just out of the intrigue I have for the guy's musical art. I find the more I read about him the more I dig the cat as a person as well. Yes, he is one of the greatest bluesmen of all times! :P

Mick Taylor who replaced Brian Jones in the stones (well before Ronnie Wood). And is one of the absolute unrecognized greats of guitar said, "Hendrix should just stop messing around and do what he's good at, blues". He absolutely rated Hendrix as the best blues player ever, bar none. Now whether you agree with that or not consider that old Mick is no (nor has ever been) a slouch.

Niki i don't think Mick Taylor is unrecognized, in guitar circles. Though he isn't well known by casual music fans. But then again most of my (non musician,)friends couldn't name anyone but Jagger and Keef in the stones, and the vast majority of musicians in most of their favorite bands.

Bad ideas have come and gone over the years. Gibson had the S-1 which was Les Paul shaped (sort of) and had single coils. It also had the Victory (see this link) which was more Strat shaped. You don't see many of either of these around, do you?

I always expected the nighthawk to do better. That looked a great guitar, unfortunately I never got chance to try one. The blueshawk is near identical except for the pickup config, and they play great.

It seems that the Big Two Guitar Makers cannot put out any totally new designs and have them succeed. It all comes down to what the market wants.

There is a Nighthawk variant reissued (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electri ... thawk.aspx).
On the other hand, I completely agree with Orvilleowner, it's way more difficult for established companies companies, such as Fender and Gibson to have new models accepted, even when they're great guitars.
What comes to my mind are the original Starcaster and the Esprit, or closer to our days, the Stratosonic, the Telesonic, the TC-90, or even something like the Aerodyne Tele.

On the other hand, I always fancied guitars with minibuckers, so I'm very willing to try something like the Vintage V100 (Les Paul Deluxe copy), I have far more respect for Trev Wilkinson putting out a 200 quid guitar than for Mr Henry J offering a 2,000 one.
And another episode came to mind. In '87, under the same Mr Henry J, Gibson came out with some superstrat-like and shipped it out with Charvel written on the headstock. Of course, Grover Jackson (who had just bought Charvel at the time) sued and they were taken away. But, hey, more proof if needed there's a history of "whatever it takes to make a buck, no low is too low". If the Norlin years were bad, the Juskiewicz ones aren't much better either.

Be carefull with Vintage guitars I have the PGM model and its a utter dog

Lots of people swear by them though and I have played Vintage guitars that were of jaw dropping quality for less money. I must therefore conclude that its just my guitar that was bad. So try a few and buy the one you like. The pickups and tuners are great. Really low powered just like the 58's. The bridge is pot metal though and could do with changing.

Thanks for the link.

Janie Jinka should have known better. Gibson should have known better, too. Then again, they are corporate opportunists.
