Hi All – New to this forum and wanted to ask a question.

I play in a covers Duo as the Lead guitarist – we cover nearly all genres and have nearly 200 tunes. So I need to be versatile.

The current guitar I gig with is a PRS CU22 – But at our Gig on Sat I took my old 91 US Strat Plus fitted with noiseless PU’s along and played that for the Rock-N-Roll, Blues, country and easy listening songs and the PRS for the rest. The Strat sounded great :D - only problem is it’s weight – Can you believe it weighs 11 Lbs  - so Sunday morning my shoulder reminded me why I don’t gig this guitar.

So the short of it is I need to look at getting another strat.
Trouble is there are so Many models I don’t know where to start.
I really like the Neck on my Strat plus in terms of the profile (not sure what it’s classed as, V,C or U) and the maple fingerboard, also the Sperzel locking Tuners.

What could I get that would be similar??

I did think of a VG strat , then I could use it for a lot more songs – but I saw weight at 8.75 Lbs which s a bit high.

Then I saw the Eric Johnson strat which is really light (7 Lbs), seems to have some special PU’s (not sure if they are noiseless?) but not sure how the neck profile would compare with the Strat Plus?

Neither of them seem have locking Tuners.

What would you guys advise me to look at? I need to narrow down my options before I find a dealer selling those models and then try some out – budget wise I’m around the cost of the VG or the Johnson models.

I’d appreciate any thoughts/advice.

Thanks

Sparky

I also have an early '90's plus deluxe and you're right - they are extremely heavy. Gotta wear the SRV style 3 1/2" wide straps on those...
The EJ is light but the pickups are not noiseless (go to one of Eric's shows - you'll see they are definitely not noiseless!) and compared to an early '90's strat plus the neck will feel like a ball bat. It's also a gloss neck opposed to the satin of a strat plus.
Can't speak for the VG as I haven't gotten a chance to test drive, but you may also want to consider an American Deluxe strat - noiseless pickups, modern (read - thinner) C shaped neck, two point tremolo like a strat plus, etc...

hi

Thanks for this info and the Delixe looks like good advice.

I used to have a Gibbo LP with a 50's neck and it was too deep, but I like my 60's neck 335 and my wide thin PRS neck - So the Deluxe may be a good fit.

Just looked at the Deluxe and it looks great in terms of spec- it's a shame they don't publish average weights. What would they be around 7-8 Lbs??

I see there is an Ash option as well - what difference does that make? weight, tone etc?

Thanks again

From what I've read Ash is supposed to be lighter, but then again my '93 plus deluxe is an Ash/Alder laminate and it weighs a ton. The EJ is the only production model that I'm aware of that has strict weight limits, so you're kind of rolling the dice on the weight issue. Tone on Ash is supposed to be brighter than alder, and was used on the very early strats before the switch to Alder...

Excellent - thanks again for the info.

I guess I need to track down a dealer (in the UK) and go and try some out.
Maybe I'll take my scales as well

cheers
