Stupid question, but do Fenders come with P90's? I know that Billy Joe of Green Day uses a LP Junior with a P90 pickup so maybe that would suit me well...

Well, Gibson makes a Billie Joe signature Les Paul Junior, which i think are lighter than normal les pauls, right? That might not be a bad choice.

No I don't think it would. Well I'd rather have one that is not a signature and with than one pickup, but it's worth looking at...

Thanks for the link. But I'm not sure if a hollow body will give me the sounds I want?

I also own a Gibson studio. I felt the same way you did and considered buying a Strat w/ humbucker to get a Fender/Gibson-like sound. I almost bought the American Special Mahogany HSS Strat. I think the guitar is awesome and has a dirty sound with a heavy vibe. If your convinced that a HSS is what you want check it out. In the end, I bought an Amercian Strat with Single coils. I don't regret it at all. Something about buying a Fender with a humbucker seemed wrong to me.

I haven't noticed that one on Fender's web site but I'll look closer. Thanks for the suggestion. But won't it be heavy like a Studio if the body is mahogany? Can the three single coils give you the power of your LP or do you just not need it?

The Amercian Special Mahogany is at the end of production, but allot of retailers still have them in stock - Guitar Center/Musicians Friend for example. The Mahogany body gives it a little darker tone, but I think its not as dark as a Gibson. Good luck and try it before you buy it.

I don't know much about this, but it was my understanding that the wood Gibson uses for the Pauls is the main reason why they are heavy. If that is so, isn't a mahogany Strat almost as heavy? I know I focus a lot on the weight, but that's because it's one of the main reasons why I'm getting a new guitar. My back hurts :)

Anyway thanks for the suggestion, I never knew there was a mahogany Strat until you mentioned it. I'll check it out.

Have you thought about a Gibson SG ?
It's lighter in weight then a LP, got humbuckers and comes in a variety
of models (cheap to expensive).

Don't think Strats are always lighter. I have a Strat plus weighing 11 Lbs that's 2 more than my LP and 1 more than my Bass Players Musicman Bass

You could try a PRS, they can get close to Gison type sounds, but also some strat-ish sounds as well (especially with the McCarty switching option). Not to mention the great build quality.

cheers

I don't like the design very much, but I'm still considering one. I think it would fit my needs very well...

PRS might actually be the guitars for me. They seem to be a very good compromise for me between the sounds I want, the feel, the looks and most importantly the weight.

I still say the Strat is the better axe. An extra pound or two don't bother me a bit.

Hey I play a VG strat and even though the Humbucker model is pretty throaty it still doesn't sound like a LP humbucker. If you want a quality made guitar with a humbucker in it that sounds similar to a LP and will give you the sound you are looking for you might want to check out a Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 or 24 It is lighter and has that sound and is very quality. I just attended a Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin concert and a lot of the guitars they were playing were Paul Reed Smith custom 22's or 24's. I have played one in the past and I thought it was one of the best sounding and playing guitars I've ever played. The only reason I did not get one is becuase I liked the features of the VG and I have another strat as well and Fender has never let me down.

Yep I'd agree a PRS.

I would advise the Custom 22 though if its LP sounds you want. The Custom 24 has the HFS (Hot Fat Screams) PU in the Bridge and they are really powerfull and a bit bright. Although the Vintage in the Neck is Good.

I had one but swapped it for a Custom 22 with Dragon 2 PU's in - much better.

But it's all a personal opinion of course - depends on what you do.
I play in a duo we cover 200+ songs from easy strummery stuff to Metal , So I use a Strat for the easy stuff, the Rock N Roll and Blues, then the PRS for the classic rock and Harder stuff.
Between the 2 guitars and my pedalboard I can pretty much cover everything.

hope it helps

cheers

Thanks very much leigh503 and SparkyG, that cleared up things for me a bit! It's nice to hear that you suggest PRS as well and has good experiences with it. It sounds like it could really do it for me. And thanks for the model suggestions, it seemed a little overwhelming when I first visited PRS's site - they have a loooot of models :) I had my eyes on the SC 250 or 245 - how's that compared to the Custom 22 and 24? Sorry, I know it's a Fender forum, but now we're talking PRS anyway, so hope it's okay...
