I'm not looking to play like him or sound like him or emulate him. I want a guitar that will be in the same tonal range as his sound. Then go from there

Than just about any Strat with Texas Scecials,a tube screamer and a wah should get you pretty close.Scot I was not downing you as I have tried over the years to sound a lot like my idols. I was on such a Hendrix kick onetime everytime I would jam with these guys they would shout out a song and I would play it using chord embelishments that would make it sound like Little Wing or Bold as Love till one day I got shot back (Dont play it like Hendrix would) so its cool to play or sound like someone but we all have to become us. I have a few licks that are all mine or that make me sound like me and the coolest thing is I was teaching my friends son for a while and he really liked two licks of mine that he threw in his playing and one day his father goes your sounding a lot like Mike. That felt good to me to know I have a sound. lol

Play with your amp first, turn the bass full on, treble just over half, mid just under half.

Another tip: Turn your pick upside down and play with it sort of on it's side. That's what Stevie did and you'd be real surprised by how much it effects tone. I tried it, and it turns out it actually feels more natural and you can play faster and cleaner. Now I can barely hold a pick the right way anymore.
The thickness of picks also has an impact on tone. (Stevie used Mediums.) I've been experimenting with different picks lately, it's a lot of fun.

Stevie actually used his fingers more than a pick. Jeff Beck too. :D

Yeah, you can see that on the DVDs. He sort of switched back and forth. I'm working of using my fingers right now, I love the tone. :)

One of my favorite performances is his second time at Montreux Jazz festival.I believe he used "Charlie" throughout the performance.Loved his tone, especially "coldshot " and tin pan alley".Could have done without the clothes though, but that was the 80s after all.

If that's the case, then all you need is a strat and a tube amp. Period.
