Not much is said about Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys. He is actually an excellent guitar player. I wonder why Fender hardly takes notice of him.

Very SRV influenced but a serious music family none the less, thanks to their father. On the question: ask yourself 'why Mayer?', and you have the answer.

The guy is vastly underrated. Agreed.

And I too have asked myself time and time again "WHY Mayer?"

they're good musicians, but I don't hear anything special or unique. They sound like a ton of blues/rock/country bands I've heard.

The "Why Mayer?" thing is funny, but I still wonder "Why Kenny Wayne Shepard?"

I like my musicians to be unique and amazing, not more of the same.

I agree. And once again this is another case where if you see them play live it is a night and day difference from what you hear on the radio. these guys truly are great musicians.

Why Mayer?
Because unlike most SRV influenced players, he dropped that style in favor of writing pop music that put him on a huge stage. Then he had people who never listened to blues watching him play it through the lens of his pop music which made it OK. A brilliant way to sneak blues into popular culture.

Because he's not unique. Sorry, but IMHO I can walk into tons of bars in Phila Pa. on open mic nights and hear better. Some guy's are just in the right place at the right time.

There is no question that John Mayer is an excellent musician/music arranger/ song writer. I even like his "music" no question there. But, a virtuoso guitar player he is not and many make him to be as one IMHO. Many seem to be confused distinguishing from a song writer/composer and exceptional guitar player. Yes, I agree with you that he is one of few young musicians that introduce blues into the pop mainstream. I give him high credits for that.

Just a side note, John Mayer was not the first to bring blues to the pop mainstream, as Elvis has already done that back in the 50s and during the 60s the Yardbirds has done that also just to name a few.

I have there first CD and it is just well played and well written music. I also think Henry brings a little something different to his blues style playing-that latin feel which not alot of guys have done. The solo in Heaven is a very well put together solo that has more major scale references than blues scale playing. I have also seen them live on PBS and they are top notch musicians. One more big hit album and I think he gets an artist series strat considering the way they give them out these days. But to be fair his playing is in the class of Mayers very good but nothing ground breaking.Except I will give him a slight nod for the latin feel-but then again he is latin.

I had the LLB 1st cd and while there was flashes of brilliance, overall there wasnt much of anything that made me sit up and take notice. Most of the songs they write are poorly written.Great harmonies , awesome chops, but lousy songwriting.I ended uo listening to maybe 3 songs on the first cd .Now I listen to none.Like Supro said ,nothing special.

Interesting to find someone else who seconds my analysis of Mayer's gig, though I don't feel he had any intention of sneaking blues into popular culture. I believe he saw blues as a limiting factor and chose a different route to a broader fan base.

Though I respect the popularity he enjoys amongst members of the Forum, personally I see him as an SRV/Matthews clone....quite capable, but not unique.
