The knobs will just pull off (possibly assist very lightly with a screwdriver) and yes the strings need to come off. I would recommend a good cleaning with all the crap off before reassembly.

Get an old shoelace, at about the middle of the shoelace slide it under the knob, take one end and wrap it around the shaft once. Then take one end in each of your hands, pull them straight up in the air, then alternate pulling back and forth, this action will pull the knob off the shaft.

Getting the knobs off was not a big deal. The problem I had when I replaced the pick guard on my Squire Strat was getting the mounting holes right. Even though I bought the pick guard from Fender the holes on the guard did not match the holes on the body. If it was way off there would be no problem but it was very close on some holes. I had to drill out a piece of the body and replace it with a round rod before mounting the new guard. It worked nicely but it was a hassle to do it. Anybody else had the same problem?

Squier is not made in the US, That's why a Fender pickguard has the
mounting holes slightly offset.
