I know that history tells us that these bands "stole" the blues from old time US players like Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson and such, although even if this was true, what the "British Invasion" did with US blues was the fire that lit up modern rock & roll.

It's hard to steal something that no one seems to want. You just take it and make it your own. I spoke to that just yesterday on another thread.
Were it not for Alan Lomax and his desire to preserve a unique culture, Muddy Waters, and everything which followed might never have happened. Fast forward 60 years and run down the 'contemporary' music channels such as VH1, MTV, FUSE, BET...............Where are the bluesmen and women? What do these kids know about it. :?:

Robert who? Muddy who? Buddy who?

Pathetic. :?

Doc

My son is 28 years old and has been playing guitar since he was 13. He is a graduate of Berklee College Of Music, and a professional guitarist who has been teaching here in Ft Lauderdale for the past 5 years. When he first started playing, it was my "duty" to expose him to the blues, and to as many blues guitarists as I could come up with.

Although he is fluent in just about any style of playing...rock, jazz, classical, metal, contemporary country, and what we call "tech" guitar...like Vai, Satriani, Johnson and such...he always comes back to the blues. I am blessed with being able to live my guitar fantasy life vicariously through him. And the majority of his peers are blues lovers as well.

This was, in my opinion, a combination of luck and the fact that I believe that if you play an instrument, you have no choice but to embrace the blues. With that silly "guitar hero" game that's all the rage today, at least this group of kids will be exposed to real music, with contributors like The Beatles, Van Halen, ACDC, Slash and such...there might still be some hope after all.

I've told this story before so I won't go into details.

Google a band named 'AGENTZ'. You can sample some of their work. The guitar player, Jason, is the son of a high school bandmate and long time friend with whom I still keep in touch. This kid walked away from it all to study law, cut his hair, and has no interest in it at all, up to and including the re-release of their record. He signed away all his rights to it. :?

Sir whether we stole blues and revived it or not, it was only because of comercialy viable American artists who crossed the water and pointed the way.

You know niki, it was a 2 way street.Muddy Waters career was stagnant until he got invited overseas and then it revitalized his career. There was a whole fan base that he didnt even know existed. He became good friends with Eric Clapton and they kind of had a father son relationship. One of my favorite blues albums is Muddy Waters "hard again".Awesome stuff.Of course the Rolling Stones were crazy about Muddy Waters enough that they named their band after one of his songs. Many of the old great blues players just want to see the music passed down and flourish.

Budglo thats my alltime favourite album too, never off my ipod. My ex wife destroyed about 2000 lp's when we broke up. My mum had saved that one, when the ex demanded she come get my clothes (i was at work).

Its certainly a two way street, thats my point. You can give as much thanks as you like to Clapton for it, he'd thank chuck berry or elvis or someone for turning him onto it all.
