I've seen a fair amount of chatter on the board lately concerning the weight of guitars.

I've always wanted to weigh my guitars.

Can anyone recommend a good affordable scale for this purpose? I have a digital but fear that since it goes to 400lbs would not be accurate under 10lbs.

if it will give you lbs and ounces then it should be pretty accurate. Such as 4.6lbs. Or does it round off to the nearest lb?

it is gives you oz's as well then test it out with a known weight. Try a iron weight if you work out at home that you know the weight of. Try a lighter weight if you have such as 5lbs or lighter if you can find it. See how accurate it is.

You can also try food that is sold by the lb such as rice. As long as its a new bag. It would be great if it is a 1lb 6 oz bag, then you can get a good idea on how accurate the scale is.

Does your post office have a self service area? Use their scale!

I have taken guitars in to a local guitar shop that does a good bit of internet/mail order business. They have been happy to weigh guitars for me.

Hello Stratoholic,

Like Orvilleowner stated the postal service is a good place.
I go up there and the folks happy to help out and are for
the most part interested in the guitars too.

Cheers.

1) Weigh yourself holding the guitar
2) Weigh yourself without the guitar
3) Subtract the two

Hi Strataholic: I just use digital kitchen scales. Accurate enough.

Bathroom scales - not so.

Cheers - C

Great advise - I'll test it's accuracy with a known weight. Thanks!

Bathroom scales round off usually to the next pound. if you're real lucky the next 1/2 pound (and really really lucky 1/4 pound).
So standing on bathroom scale weighing yourself then you with the guitar will give you a 'ball park' figure

Best to find a place with a postal scare that can do ounces

I have access to a postal meter here at work and put my 2008 MIA on it..
Sienna Burst = 8.30lbs = 3.78k
And
Strat /with SKB case 17.70lbs = 8.02k

Go to a sporting goods store and pick up a fish scale like this:

A digital fish scale, which you can get for under $20 works nicely to weigh your guitars to the exact ounce.

I didn't even think about the fish scale. Good idea. I have 2 very accurate scales for weighing fish for competition. I gotta try that.

Thanks for the idea

Find a cyclist who is a weight weinie, or a bike shop. There is a great deal of emphasis on weight for competitive cyclists they should have one. A competetive legal bike will weigh around 14 - 17 lbs so you will get a high degree of precision.

I like the weigh yourself with/without! I have a balance beam scale so its precise.
