Hello,

I am looking for my first electric guitar. I really like Tom Verlaine's sound and would want a guitar that could emulate, if desired, that sound.

As a cheaper alternative to buying a Jazzmaster, do you think I could replicate that sound if I found a Strat HH (2 humbuckers), bought some Jazzmaster pickups (I see Seymour Duncan sells some maybe for about 60 each?), and paid a guitar tech guy to carve out the body so the pickups will fit? Maybe I could find a used Strat HH for $300, the pickups for about $120, then maybe $200 to the guitar tech guy to install the pickups and set up the guitar - that's $620 total.

Also I have been doing some research and it seems that the Jazzmaster pickups and P-90s are NOT really the same kinda pick up. Is this true? If they were, I could probably just get the strat HH and put something like the Phat Cat or other p-90 pu's designed to fit in a humbucker slot.

Is there anything else that gives the Jazzmaster its distinctive sound? I figure if I have the pickups, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard, with a tremelo, it would be close right?

Thanks!

For what it's worth, I've seen MIJ Jazzmasters on eBay for $625, but I haven't checked in a while.

Depends how picky your ears are. You’ll probably be in the ballpark soundwise with Jazzmaster p’ups in a strat, but remember that the Jazzmaster has a very different bridge/tremolo setup than a strat, not to mention a totally different switching and wiring scheme…
