I am not talking about outlandish collectible prices, but which models do you think people will be wanting in the future?

Any ideas?

I think some of the early custom shop relic guitars may be worth something in the future seeing as how the trend really hit the mainstream. Not that I am a fan of that or anything, and I don't own any.

What are your thoughts?

I think Plus, Plus Deluxe, and Ultras are going to be soon :) I cannot think of anything recent...

Agreed, most of the Custom Shop stuff will always be collectible, but the MIA stuff seems to be picking up steam. I'd add the Tele Plus models as well, as they are already creeping up in price. I think you'll also find that rare birds will happen also, like white blondes and other unique factory models that maybe weren't in the catalogs.

I think there is a difference between "collectible" and "hold its value". Yes, the MIA models will all hold their value well over their MIM counterparts as they are more desirable and made in much fewer numbers -- but they are ... for the most part ... probably not considered collectible. As far as collectible goes, I would bet on the Dave Murray signature line (his earlier MIJ sig is already showing signs of that). Maybe the VG? Maybe the Big Apple?

01GT - This is off-topic, but... I just noticed again that quote in your sig. I know it is attributed to Segovia all over the Internet, but... Segovia was actually married only twice, and certainly had many more than three guitars. So he couldn't have said it.

like the others said, the plus series will really take off, I predict. I also believe the '80s and '90s 57/62 reissues will only increase in value.

Chanman is pretty wise for a young guy.lol If you look outside the custom shop models the Hottest Fenders are all the early 80s reissues which are already selling for over 3 grand for the earliest models. The plus and Ultra models are kind of an enigma. You very rarely see that many on ebay especially Ultras , and when you do they dont sell for a very high price they sell for a decent price. It is almost like everyone is hiding them under there bed and I guess that is why I have my blueburst Ultra there too. I had put up a post a few months ago on why Fender should revise that series with some updated features as they would be ultimate shred machines. I think collector wise there are some guitars outside of the Fender Gibson family that are going to be worth a decent amount of money.

It's hard to predict. Right now there seems to be a lot of people looking for USA made Roadhouse and Lonestars and I've seen them going for top dollar on the web.

Very good point Jay about losing money first before making a profit. I now have more guitars than at any point in my life and to keep things real I check and see what the going price is on the guitars I own and since the major majority are Fender MIA axes I can turn around tomorrow and sell them all and not lose a dollar which is a better feeling than someone who bought say gold. Because gold did not give that person the happiness and joy that my guitars gave me. Plus I have two sons and one is a straight up player which means my guitars are going to see another 47 years and who the hell knows what the price will be then, or if Fender will even be around as we know it. As I stated my best days playing are behind me I got all kinds of hand problems and the greatest time I had with guitars was the 20 years I had two Fenders and an acoustic and could care less what they were worth, as playing music was all that mattered. Now if I buy a guitar it is more on the side of if it is going to rise in value I guess you can look at it like playing the market and the only thing that got my foot in the door was the economy taking a dive and guys having to let go of great guitars to make a car or house payment which most of the guitars that I bought recently the owner most of the time said that was the reason for letting go of that ax. Now it is a total sellers market out there and there might be young guys that have some cash to buy something to play but also with the mind set it will be worth much more in years to come. I say go ahead and do it but dont ever forget the reason you picked up a guitar in the first place and all the time you sacrificed to learn to play as it is always about the music. Someone can show me a 59 Les Paul and some pre CBS Fenders but if he could not play a note the only thing that would impress me was his guitars.

I appreciate that. I previously had Ben Franklin's "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy". But - similarly - he did not say that either. Thanks for the heads up ...

I recently sold my '73 Strat for over six times what I paid for it back then.

Nothing special about it and it needed fret work. :?
