Can someone explain the reason behind switching to 500k pots over the standard 250k pots?

It is my understanding that it allows more of the signal from the pups through. But what will that do to the tone? The 250k pots are in there to reduce the very high end from the singles right?

I just want to know why a lot of people do it and what the advantage is?

hello there,it is true that the 500k pots allow more signal compared to the 250k..as for the tone,with 500k you get more treble and more of an "edgy" sound whereas with the 250k pots you get a more "mellow" sound...500k pots are usually used for humbuckers which tend to have a "darker" sound...in general for standard strat single coils 250k pots are ideal..
