If I had to narrow it down to one I’d have to say Eric Johnson would be my ultimate strat player – he covers the entire stylistic and tonal spectrum of what the strat is capable of – from super clean to bluesy grit to super smooth saturated and almost out of control feedback fuzz. He also understands all of what makes a strat sound great (just check the specs on his signature model…)

Good choices so far. Anyone think Yngwie Malmsteen is the ultimate Strat player today?

I love YJM's playing (I have an antique white strat that is a clone of his "Duck" strat, sans the scalloped board) but I wouldn't consider him the ultimate as his sound is kind of one dimensional - now that one dimension is pretty amazing, but he's not as tonally or stylistically diverse on the strat as EJ or SRV - just my opinion...

I agree about Ynwgie. Ouststanding player but sounds the same on most his records. And Eric Johnson is very under rated. How about Eric Clapton, Robert Cray or Jeff Beck? And don't forget Ritchie Blackmore.

All great - don't leave out David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Also check out Mark Knoplfler's strat playing - especially the first two Dire Straits albums - beautiful, soulful clean strat playing from start to finish...

Sure, just ask him! He'll tell you so

So many amazing Strat players, it's hard to nail it to one.

"it's hard to nail it to one" I'm with ya there.... Then again the best selling guitar of all time is bound to have JUST A FEW good players.

For me its a two way split between Knoplfler and Mike McCreedy fo Pearl Jam. Mikes not an originator or inventor Just a really soulful lead player. You have to listen to his side project stuff to appreciate him.

Besides Hendrix my favourite Strat players are, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson and Bo Winberg (playing with the Spotnicks, kind of Shadows).

Yngwie is pretty awesome but my top choices would have to be
Eric clapton, Ritchie Blackmore(back in the deep purple days) and
Eddie van halen.
