If you really want to know when the various parts were made, you'll have to take a look under the pickguard and in the neck pocket .... the dates are usually stamped there (for recent construction).

Does anyone know why Fender can't be more accurate with their dating?? To say a (fill in blank) serial # was made from 1984-1987 is pretty vague. I know that bodies and necks are not always made at the same time, but a 4 year spread seems a little long. Anybody??

Paisley, do this!! 8) I think that their serial number system covering that era 80-90 left much to be desired. Mike

Just Email Fender direct.... surprisingly, they're very helpful and will give you factory information on your guitar (and generic info on the model).

Many thanks to Ed Treat, Fender Consumer Relations, who gave me this info on mine...

I could easily date either. I'd pick the 64 given the choice though

Anyway she knows lots about tyres.

If I recall correctly when CBS sold Fender they threw in all the old materials too including decals. When production started up again in the mid/late 80's they had a bunch of left over '84 decals that they used so even though a serial number starting with E4 was made to go on a '84 Strat it may have ended up on an '87.

I can't believe only one person has suggested checking the neck and body dates. While the serial number will get you to within a few years, checking the neck and body will give you an exact date (if it's legible). Don't be afraid to pull the neck, it's a Strat you won't hurt her.
