First I will thank you for the reply....second, It is actually not what I expected. Doesn't anyone understand the point of the entire conversation. It doesn't have anything at all to do with cables. Nothing at all to do with transferring electronic signals, couldn't care less about capacitance. Don't care even the slightest bit about what kind of cables people use, buy, make, or like just because they look pretty.

I said "serious player" as a reference to someone who plays regularly, if you pick up the guitar once a month, your probably not serious about your playing. The Monster reference was for one reason, and one reason only...LIFETIME UNCONDITIONAL WARRANTY...If you play regularly, and you NEVER want to buy another cable for the rest of your life, you may want to consider spending a few more dollars up front.

So if we can agree that cables have nothing at all to do with what we are trying to discuss, could you please explain to me how calling someone a "fool" is appropriate in any way? How is telling anyone that they are getting "ripped off" appropriate in any way? And what kind of "data" supports this type of disrespect for anyone?

Lets all try to remember that the original question was about a cable that was damaging the nitro finish on a guitar! It had nothing at all to do with electronics. My thought (which was completely innocent) was that if this guy was going out to buy a new guitar cable, he should buy one that is covered forever.

By the way...and I have tried to stay away from this but I feel now that you are all missing something. For what its worth, I have been using Monster Instrument Cable for my guitars, and Monster Speaker Cable for my amp cabinets connections forever...years & years....daily, weekly, monthly. In all of this time, I have had only one cable break, after yanking it out of the guitar by accident (my fault) and I had a brand new one (replaced with no questions asked) the same day.

What do you say?

Oh...and by the way, since its such a slow day, and at least you guy's do inspire a RANT.

NO ONE MAKES THEIR OWN GUITAR CABLES!

I have been playing with bands for dozens of years, I have tons of friends that are guitarists, and all of you guy's also know that when you need a cable, you bop down to the local guitar store and buy one. 99 out of 100 players will do this. Of course there are tech geeks out there that make cables...of course they are as good as any cable that you can buy...but the plain indisputable fact is that NO ONE makes their cables.

Even Chop (premier cable maker) just bought a Planet Waves Cable for himself! Ask your guitar playing buddies if they make their own cables. They won't even know what your talking about.

I'll bet that there are plenty of guy's out there that actually build their own guitars. Some wood working tools, a little skill and knowledge, and of course the guitar players most essential tool "the soldering iron" and bam...you built yourself a guitar...although as with guitar cables...I'd bet the ranch that we bop down to the guitar store and buy our next new guitar.

Lots of really smart guy's out there with lots of really silly things to say!

I'm a little confused....if you have been using the same cables for the past 20 years without any problems, why would you not buy the same brand of new ones and be good for the next 20 years?

I love to learn new things...I try to make sure that every day I learn something new...I am very open minded, and willing to listen to anything and everything that people have to say.

I don't want to "look up" guitar builders or cable makers on this forum, although I'm very sure that there are plenty of them out there. I would just like to actually meet one in person, play with one sometime, see one playing somewhere, and so far in my 30 years of playing, collecting, and loving guitars, this has yet to happen.

I'm sure that you will agree that we could "look up" just about anything on the computer and find someone who does something, uses something, or makes something. These are anecdotal stories and not the everyday real world. Do a lot of the guy's you play with make their own instruments and cables? Have you been out to see players using home made cables and home made guitars...I doubt it

Birds of a feather flock together I guess.

Over my last 30 years, about one-third of my guitar playing friends have built their own guitars. I only recently built my first (2 1/2 yrs ago).

About the same number build their own cables (more often way back when money was tighter) or rebuild them (you know, cut off the old end and solder in a new Switchcraft plug).

One guy even builds his own amps and effect pedals.

But I won't hazard a guess what percentage of the general guitar playing population do these things. It could be quite small because Warmoth, USACG, etc are small companies compared to the big boy guitar companies.

First of all, thanks for writing, I do appreciate the exchange. Secondly, I sincerely apologize for the sarcastic tone, which I must admit was intentional, and most certainly inspired by some of the misquoted, and misunderstood responses to the very simple point that I was trying to make.

In my humble experience, and you may discount it as you like, I have not had the pleasure, to this point, to meet or play with any "builders". I look forward to the potential of this happening in the future.

As for my "measure of the real world" and its relation to "these forums", I am obviously the confused one. I was under the misinformed impression that this was the "Fender Stratocaster" forum. I can see clearly now that it is actually the "build your own musical equipment" forum.

It is mistakenly promoted as a place to "shoot the breeze" about Stratocaster guitars. To be honest with you, if I wanted to build a guitar, or solder together my own cables, the "shoot the breeze" about Strats might not be the first place that I look. So it could be possible that my "real world" measure as it relates to this forum is appropriate, and maybe the elec tech info should actually be posted on elec tech forums.

If you Google Search "guitar cables" (in the real world) you will be 10 pages deep and yet to find even one listing for "supplies to build your own cables" Just maybe ... your measure of the real world is as misguided as you believe mine to be.

Thanks again
Noodles

Thanks again for the well written response. At least you have the decency to respond. Sarcasm is within my nature, and I intend no disrespect. I do, on the other hand, feel that opinion is exactly that ... opinion.

Is one opinion better than another? The nature of opinion as a concept would negate the theory that one is right and one is wrong.

As far as me adding "any important information about anything" which you have clearly expressed in your response, my goal was to let people know that they can buy, use, or make anything that they would like without being berated, offended, called "fools", talked down to, discounted, told that they were "ripped off" and be told that they know nothing about anything, because their "opinion" is different than yours and the other "know better's" contributing to these forums.

It is humbling to realize how little I actually know about anything. (sorry about that sarcasm) But if I need to find a place where opinions are berated, I certainly know where to look.

Please don't be so thin skinned....how boring would any forum be if everyone just agreed with everyone. The concept of "forum" is to discuss subjects with others, and debate is very healthy for the mind. I know that you believe that this can be done effectively without the "you know nothing" talk down.

I'm sure that you are familiar with Ed Roman in Las Vegas. Here is a great example of a very knowledgeable guy, tons of experience, builds a beautiful guitar and also carries many name brand guitars as well. His website is first class, his showroom is first class, and his attitude towards anyone's opinion other than his own is embarrassing. He will aggressively "put down" any opinion other than his. His testimonial section of the website is just packed with "i love you Ed" letters. You will never find any letters that disagree with anything that he ever said or done. You guy's should be bigger than that.

Thanks for playing
