Ok folks. I have an 80's strat body that has had the original neck stolen years back (don't ask how...) and I'm on the 2nd replacement neck already. Only the bridge is original so I don't care to keep it all orignal.

I've decided to give it that relic look. The neck is a replacement Fender maple neck and the plate was swapped to an 8hole plate. I am willing to trade a few tricks of my own in hopes to get some ideas on how to produce the RELIC look.

The plastics were all dipped in black coffee to offer an aweome fade job. The plate screws were buffed a great deal to remove parts of the chrome. The neck was refished with a semi gloss poly with amber flakes for that yellowish look with a replacement speghetti logo decal.

What are you secrets to wearing down the body?

Tie a rope to it and drag it behind your car down a bumpy gravel road. That should work good. :D

Funny, I keep hearing folks tell me to drag it behind a car. I'd like to safely wear down the finish, not take chunks out of the wood. However, I might try tossing it on the treadmill.

check youtube, there are some videos on there which should be helpful.

I hear the "drag it through a fire, or behind a car" stories a lot too but just can't bring myself to do that.

There are also places that will relic your guitar for you based on your specs. Usually around $150-300 though depending on the work done.

Play it every day for at least 3-4 hours for the next 5-10 years, that should help you get the relic look ^^ :P

$35 and a balogna sandwich (with cheap yellow mustard).

$25, a box of jawbreakers and a half eaten turkey drumstick and thats as low as I can go for the cost of my services. Unless you have access to one of those Leg lamps from A Christmas Story that is.

The playing has to be with a full band in a cramped "studio." That's how you get the dings from cymbals and the bass guitar tuners and ... drum sticks bouncing off it.

whats the problem here
I was just browsing through and saw this thread
you guys are being a little rough on someone who was asking
an honest question this thread is not about if you like
relic look it is how he might acheive , he has already decided he
wants the look just looking for a way to do it
and the (play it twenty years)comments are not helpful
are you saying he hasn't put in his dues to play a reliced guitar
and only people that have been playing for hundred years or
have a couple thousand to give the custom shop can play them
