This is my first post, so please be kind. I have done the due diligent forum search thing prior to posting, but was unable to find a clear answer to my question: How to tell a Highway 1 strat from a Standard American? I have seen a fairly good deal on a 2005 strat that is claimed to be a MIA, but the deal is so good that I am questioning whether it is a Highway 1 or not. I don't intend to start a flameup about which is better I would just like to know how tell the difference. I have a few high-res pics. I can tell from the Z5xxxxxx serial number that is an american-made, but the Fender site doesn't tell me much more. Can you tell from the bridge/headstock/pot knobs/etc?

Thanks, I appreciate the crowdsource!

The '05 Hwy 1s have the small headstocks on the S-S-S models. The Hwy 1 uses different string trees too. The Am Std has the bi-flex dual truss rod and micro adj on neck plate.

I think the pre-2006 Hwy1 necks had 22 frets.

So far this is what I got for easily distinguishing 2005s:
Highway 1 / American Standard
6 screw bridge / 2 screw bridge
2 string trees / 1 string tree
plain neckplate / engraved neck plate
F on peg back / no F on peg back

the finishes are different, but that can be changed easily through refinishing. Hwy1 doesn't come with a case, but you can always buy one.

thanks everyone for the help. i have an American Standard to buy....

This thread is really a good topic. Very early Highway ones look very similar to the American standards, specially from a far. You really would examine the two strats up close to determine if it is a Highway One. The 2006 and later Highway ones are much easier to spot due to the bigger 70s style headstock. This should be a heads up for all when purchasing a used American Standard Strat.

As I recall, Fender made a limited run 2007 highway one strat with the traditional 50s headstock and Fender Logo in Sea Foam Green with mint pickguards and a set of Custom Shop 69 pickups. I forget which online vender was selling them..I beleive it was elderly music.

Oh and don't forget that your HW1 will appreciate in value so quickly that by the time they complete your transaction, you can walk out to the car , and then walk right back into the store and sell it back to them for four or five times what you paid for it!!!!!

all kidding aside, great guitar, definitely a distinctly different feel than an Am Std that certainly some people will like better.

Mass amounts of Giggles 12B   Also agree with all kidding aside comment!!!! These people who have been getting the HWY One's for 400.00 are getting a deal and a half at that price!!!!

The HSS version of the Highway One Strat always had the large headstock. The SSS version started out with the small headstock.

As pointed out, the HWY1 has a 6-screw vintage style trem and no micro tilt neck adjustment. The American Standard has the 2-point trem and micro tilt (and bi-flex truss rod, but that's not outwardly obvious).

the headstock. i'm not a fan of the oversized headstock and thats the one thing that kept me from buying a Hwy 1.

Interesting comment... I was just like you until I got a 2006 72 Tele Deluxe Reissue. I dig that neck so much that I've searched the Fender parts lists looking for a strat with the exact same neck... thusfar, no luck!

I suspect the HWY1 would be close so yea, It's a classic Fender neck. Man, can fender make the necks OR WHAT!

From my own perspective, this is certainly 100% true...although everyone is entitled to have a differing opinion.

(am I in yet?)
