can you put a strat in a gig bag with the tremolo bar on or should you remove it

You could strip it if you don't remove it, and replacing a tremolo block is not fun.

I don't recommend leaving it on in the bag. However I often leave it on while in my cases. I just rotate the arm toward the contoured edge.

Keep in mind I bend mine up so by the time I'm done molding it to my preference, i'll sit very close to the contoured edge. The cases I use also have room in that area...

I am very anal about my floating bridges and never had issued pulling them out of the cases with the bar on.

If I was going to travel long distances, then yeah I'd remove it.

Yes. I've had a strap pop loose and drop the guitar to the ground, landing on the arm and breaking it off there, #$@*&!% sucks>_<

I ended up replacing the whole block, the pickguard and volume knob. It fell right onto cement. Luckily I had another guitar ready to go, but holy $@!& is that embarrassing as $@!& at a show. I started duct taping the $@!& out of my straps since then.
