chuck berry did do alot to advance rock n roll
however his riffs start to all sound the same to me
just recycled with a few different notes or slowed
stopping in a different place so he was innovative
but didn't take it much further
the same with a lot of early blues musicians
robert johnson was great but listen to his intros and that same old turnaround he found a few riffs and just played around with them a little
but God bless those UK boys they took those blues concepts
and added more melodic lines and harmonies they also incorporated
major chord progressions and major scale lead lines bands like
the yardbirds ' cream the stones and later zep
keith is no rookie and chuck isn't the final word in guitar players

Chuck Berry is indeed both a legend and a pioneer in modern rock. However, he only wrote about 3 songs and then just changed the words around. I have a Chuck Berry CD called "The Great 28" and half the songs sound the same. Actually, if you listen to Maybellene and then listen to Thirty Days, they're the exact same song.

"Runn'in to and fro', hard work'in at the mill, never fail, in the mail, here come a rotten bill  "

"Blond haired, good look'in, try'in to get me hooked, want me to marry, buy a home, settle down, write a book"....Ugh!!

Life, sweet, simple and to the point  Berry said it best 8)

Berry took what came before and morphed it into a musical form which became a classical scaffolding for the rock music to come.

I don't know many guitarists that haven't borrowed a riff or two from Chuck. He does have a reputation for being a PITA to work with.

You might want to think twice about accepting that gig, or just suffer through it to be able to say you did. I have every confidence that YOU are up to the task.

Though these days, I expect, past 80, he may not be straying too far from St. Louis.

Doc

He's got atittude unbecoming, and certainly not to an audience the likes of Keith Richards who, in his own right, has become an equal professionally. He should be acting more in the capacity of a teacher/mentor than a brat.
