Do you care more about A) the way your Strat looks...

...or do you B) just want a player that feels and sounds good?

I'd say 25% of A and 75% of B for me (except for one of 'em)

I would have to say 10% for looks and 90% for feel and sound. I can always change the looks of one that feels and plays great!!!

I posed the question because most of the threads in here currently are referring to cosmetics rather than sound and feel.

Cosmetics are easy to discuss. Feel and sound are not. And much more subjective. If we are discussing a Lake Placid Blue S-S-S Stratocaster, we both have an idea of precisely what is being discussed. Now if I describe a mellow tone that pleases me and a neck that fits perfectly in my hand, the sound and feel could be easily misinterpreted.

I would say feel and play is the most important because if you don't have that then why bother having to start with.

Hi Mike,

I gotta say the way they feel and play.
It turns out I have owned more white guitars
than any other color, and frankly I would never
say its my favorite color or go out looking for a white
guitar but yet I've owned mostly that color.

Although I do get a kick out of these,

Cheers.

To answer the question. Playability is prime, how it feels, the sound can be tweaked later to my liking, how it feels weighted and slung, how my hand wraps around and slides on it. Then comes look. I love the offset body guitars, for this, they just look cool and feel great. One of the reasons I'm not a big Tele guy, I don't like the way they feel.

I hate to say this but its all looks with me. I could own the best playing/sounding guitar in the world. If it looked ugly i wouldnt play it.

Back when I started I was just a pre-teen girl who really just cared about what color the guitar was. Which is why one of my Strats is purple and the other is blue, both with custom pickguards.
But now I think I'm more about feel and sound because I've been playing guitar longer and I know what I like.

Guitars are like women....(knew that one was coming huh Mike )
No offense intended fellow female Strat players
I've had some (guitars) that look great and play great and others well...
when I was younger it was more about looks but as my ability improved so did my desire for better playing guitars...

Both for me. Some things that are must-haves for me, in no particular order..

- feel: does it feel like a part of me?
- tone: does it have the tones I need?
- quality: I hate cheap things, and notice the difference
- vibe: does it inspire me to play, or is it just a guitar?
- looks: I could never be happy with an ugly guitar or something that I don't find beautiful, which doesn't necessary mean pretty and polished

some examples:

Les Paul: beautiful, great tone, hate the way they feel and get no inspiration or vibe off them

Squier: might have a decent tone or feel and looks, but I'd never be happy with it since I see them as cheap versions of the "real thing". if some argue that they're "great", but I really don't care. I'd hate playing it every minute

Steingerger: feels good, good tone, but ugly as sin to me

My strat: customized, a little "worn" but very cool, can play it all day without thinking about what to play, perfect tone, perfect feel and vibe. it's like a part of me
