That's a damn fine job you have done with that hunk o wood. Is this your first shot at creating a guitar from scratch? If so that curved top is a mighty nice additional feature that you decided on for the first guitar. And an amazing job on her thus far! Most people would not even consider a curved top for a first project. Kudos!

I must say, I'm all in on this thread. Can't wait to see the progress as the guitar slowly starts to emerge from that piece of wood.

Are you using "Electric Guitar Construction" by Tom Hirst as a reference for this project? I just picked it up today and it's got my juices flowing. Now I'm thinking about a new project from scrap. I had plans for a partscaster, but after reading some of the book I am leaning more and more towards trying to do the body and neck myself. Your thread looks like it will keep me inspired!

Keep up the amazing work! I look forward to seeing each step of the process.

Thanks Scot! No, this is my 1st from scratch full scale build. I didnt really see the arch top as that big of an obsticle since the process for adding it, all be it time consuming, was not very difficult. No, I'm not using any books or other resources outside of scanning a few web sites for some specs ( ie correct scale, bridge and pick up spacing and such). Its pretty much alot of planning and what little common sense I have.

Now I'm even more impressed! I look forward to following this thread and seeing how things come along. I am considering trying something like this in the future, so I am very interested to see how things go along the way to the finished product.

Keep the photos and descriptions coming!

and good luck!

Now here's an interesting thread!

I'm curious about where you are going to go with this body: what kind of pickup(s), bridge/trem, etc ...

Don't tell us, though, I'd like to be surprised!

I still say Ebony board on a quartersawn neck.

I also vote for Tortoise Shell guard. Gold hardware might look nice, but Im torn on that idea.

The fret board will be Ebony. There will be no guards! Still up in the air on hardware color. Will either be gold or nickle.

i like the tortoise shell pickguard with three-layer binding, myself.
$20.00-$35.00, depending on how bad the retailer rips you off, i guess.

OK. So I've reached a point where I have to make some decisions before I can go any further with this guitar.

First off, I cant decide on pick ups. I know I want humbuckers, but what kind? I'm considering Gibson (PAF style buckers) Wolfgang buckers and some buckers marketed by DOS guitars out of Ontario Canada. Since I'm dead locked in my mind I'd like to hear some opinions rather than flipping a coin to reach a decision.

The 2nd decision I have to make is on the bridge. I had originally planned on slapping a tone pro's tone-a-matic bridge on it. But have since considered a wolfgang trem and a PRS fixed bridge. Any opinions on these?

You need to open a account with photobucket, upload your pictures to there. Hover your pc's cursor over the picture you want to display. A series of codes will appear in a box select the one that starts . Copy that code and paste it into your post here.

You can also host them from TweedCase... and have your own instrument pages there too. (shameless plug, but helpful :D )

I'm not all that familiar with humbuckers but I would definitely go with a PAF style pickup. I'm not so sure I would go with a Gibson made one though. There's tons of makers out there but I would probably choose Seymour Duncans, Lollars, or Fralins. There's also the Bare Knuckle buckers that sound intriguing. Actually (after checking the BK website) I would probably choose one of the many Bare Knuckle varieties. There's got to be at least one that tickles your fancy.
As far as the bridge goes; a Tone Pros tune-o-matic sounds good to me.
These are just my opinions though and I must stress that I don't have much experience with humbucking LP style guitars. I'm a single coil Strat man through and through.

Amazing build by the way. Your craftmanship is amazing and also inspiring. I can't wait to see the final product. Keep us updated. This is the most interesting thread I've seen since the introduction of the great Vinnypop.
