I was checking this thing out at my local Guitar mega store and was pretty impressed with it. At least for the little amount of time I spent with it.

I was wondering if anyone is using this multi effects pedal and what your opinion is of it. Its pretty inexpensive (less then a standard single effects pedal in most cases) and gives replications of 6 distortion pedals, 3 or more Wah, Chorus, Flanger and I think it was 12 different classic head/cab combos. plus 40 drum beats. (this description is from memory so is probably not very accurate. But you get the idea)

Can someone who uses this unit give me your opinion on it?

I'm not looking to use it to gig with. Just to use at home.

Here is the manufacturers link to the unit

I got one about 2 weeks ago. It was my first venture into using effects and I gotta say I was blown away. It's a very simple little piece of equipment, easy to set up and customize. I'd say you cannot go wrong. When I first got it i was using a 15w solid state amp and it made a ton of difference. I recently got a 5w Peavey Royal 8 tube amp and it's even better with this amp.

You can't go wrong with this pedal, it's capabilities and all the different amp/modelling options it has. I got mine on ebay "new" for $50.

I'd say go for it.

I have it Scot. Its ok for gigging, but i cant bear it for home use. The amp sims are quite terrible, so are the compressors and the speaker sims. The drive pedals are not bad at all, some of the modulation effects are good some are really bad. The delays and reverbs are divine.

The unit only realy comes into its own when you use xedit to edit the patches. That in itself is a convoluted procedure though. Using it as a recording interface is a nono too. Theres just way too much delay (latency?).
Its well built and will handle being thrown around well. Like all these things though it just not designed for it. You'd have to be set up 5ft away from a power outlet.
Not overly impressed, line6 do far better imo.

Would you say that this machine is more then sufficient for just practice? That's all I'm looking at it for.

I'm just looking for a "one and done" type of purchase. At least for now. I basically want it to be able to achieve different sounds with one unit and to have a drum beat just to practice with. Plus this unit has a lot of the popular effects that I am interested in that I would have to otherwise purchase separately.

Since I'm not looking to gig with it. I can't justify buying all the effects I would like to have.

Is there something out there similar that you would recommend over this unit? Something around the same price? Say $150 or less.

Thanks for the review dbr2026

I really like the idea of one unit that can do it all.

Scot I dont know about anything in any $ amount. I'm a £'s guy.

If your looking for pedal sims then its about the best situation you could put the unit in. Just turn the amp sims off (their all really mid scooped and thin). For a good simulated easy to sling in the back of a van setup i used a pod v2 into a solidstate poweramp.

Dbr2026 my view doesnt negate your, just differs from it mate. Your opinion is certainly as valid as mine. Perhaps more so as i'm really (stupid insanely) picky about amp sounds.

my opinion is: for the price, options, ease of use and capabilties you can't go wrong. You can probably find one close to new for around $50-60 on ebay. For practicing (which is what I use it for) it is perfect and I can't see you needing anything more.

Again, this is my opinion after having talked to a lot of "effects heads" and various people prior to buying it. Once I got it and have it set up to my personal needs, it's perfect for practicing around the house and just trying to get some variety.

You said you want a one and done, well it think the RP90 is it. At least it is for me.

noted, i was just thinking based on his first post, he seemed to want something easy and basic for practicing and foolin around. my buddies all have some serious effects setups and I just like my little RP90 for now while i learn about all the different options on effects.

regards

that's along the same line of my thinking right now. With all the different effects already in there, I can try out different sounds and see what I do and don't like. Then when I get more serious about things I will have a better idea of what I want and can purchase some of the stomp boxes that I came to like (that are programmed into this unit)

are the drum beats pretty decent? Or are they kinda cheesy

forgot about the money thing. No worries.

how well does the detune function on this unit work? Or does it work? lol
Is it something that I can hit the button and be in a (makeshift) drop D tuning? Or does it work in some other way?

they seem good to me, i mean are workable. you can speed them up and slow them down along with there being 40 different basic beats. I've been using them more and more as I try to practice on my blues scales.

if you decide to get thre RP-90 definitely report back and let us know how you like it. I dont think you will be disappointed.

They are fun, and have some nice effects, as well as some unusual effects. The drum machine is pretty good, although I wish there was a way to set up the timing better (there may be; I haven't found it yet)

If you do your own settings, I have found it way better to not use the cab sims; I am 50/50 on the amp sims

Bottom line though - I used the heck out it the first few weeks; now I can't remember when I used it last
