My husband has a Fender Stratocaster with case that he bought new in February of 1978. He is thinking of selling it and would like to know the approximate value. I have the original contract, the model # was 10-0906 and serial number 677855. He also bought a super reverb amp with cover (model 21-0500, serial # 18600) We also have the original owner's manual for the guitar and owner's manual and schematic for the amp. Both are in good shape and work great.

Any help would be appreciated.

I do not know right off hand, however if you go to ebay.com or craigslist and search for like products, you can see what others are going for. If they are in good condition, they should be worth a pretty penny. Also they can help you sell these products if you two decide to do so as this forum does not allow sell or trades to be posted.

SN cropped up this if you click American Made:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1975

I also thought it needed a S prefix but it actually says it was made in 1975. I guess it had been in the shop for a while before he bought it in '78.

Dunno if 70's strats ever hung around like that. It was a really busy period for fender. Its very possible though.

Maybe not a "new" guitar but sold as new in '78? Very interesting to say the least. No, people did not do that back then, those were the good ole days (Riiiiiiiight).

The serial numbers moved to the headstock with mid-1976 construction. Then they got the "S" prefix.

Sure a 1975 Strat could have hung around a shop for a couple years.
It happens even today. Not that you'd find a new 1975, well, you know ...

Thanks for all the info guys! I had no idea the guitar was a 1975 model. On his contract it said "new". Hmmm....

Nerak (Karen with my bacwards eyes in) the guitar could still be sold as new despite being manufactured three years earlier, if it hadnt been sold before. It does happen. One of my guitars was already a year old when i bought it last year.
Being a 75 instead of a 78 only increases value. £2500 - £4000 depending on condition, in the UK. Dont know anything about 70's fender amps though sorry.

On Ebay and Craigslist, People do not know the value of what they are selling and they are going way way too cheap, unless you set your value higher. Some music stores have collectors who they contact if a certain type of instrument comes in or they think they would want it. They get finders fees from collectors. I have a FENDER STRATOCASTER
MODEL NUMBER S786582. IT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION ONLY A FEW MINOR SCRATCHES THAT COULD EASILY BE BUFFED OUT. I PURCHASED NEW IN 1978 BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT WAS DIFFERENT YEARS. HOW DO YOU TELL EXACTLY WHAT YEAR IT IS. I WAS OFFERED 2000 CASH BUT FIGURED IT WAS WORTH MORE. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO TELL THE YEAR LET ME KNOW THANKS

Not on this planet!

A mid '60s blackface might command $2500 in pristine condition but a late '70's silverface Super Reverb would extremely fortuitous to go for even a grand.

Just the way it is.

I would say the guitar in good shape and original would be more in the 4 to 5 thousand range.

Thanks for reviving this 1.5 year old thread.

You can get an idea of when it was assembled by checking date codes on the bottoms of the pickups, on the potentiometers, and on the end of the neck. Each piece was made at a different time, which can sometimes vary by months, so usually the neck date is usually considered the guitar's "birthweek" (the dating is usually just week/year).

I would imagine that the guitar and amp have long since been sold but according to my guitar bible the value of the guitar would be between $1500 and $2000 and the amp $1100-$1350.
