Hello,

While my 1991 Strat Ultra is in pristine shape I realize it is "mortal " and I am seeking to buy another new strat that comes close to the specs that make ( to me ) my Ultra such a great guitar.

An ebony fretboad is one of those features along with the neck specs ( modern "C" shape 25.5 scale, 9.5 radius & 22 frets ). Problem is I can find only one model that has the ebony fretboard & all my neck specs too .... it is the the American Deluxe HSS FMT or QMT. Perfect! but I prefer the tradional "top" look with a pickguard.

So, am I overlooking any other Strat models with Ebony fretboards that have the neck specs I seek? My quest would end if Fender made a (regular ) American deuxe with an ebony fretboard. Last thing, which pick-up configuration would come closest to the stock lace sensor pick-ups on my Ultra - Blue, Silver and 2 red. It seems the Deluxe and Deluxe HSS offer regular and hotter piclups. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter Gutierrez ( First time user ) :)

PS wonder why Fender does not offer ebony as an option on more of their great higher end guitars?

Have you thought about searching for a secondhand Ultra ?

Fender Custom Shop could build you a Ultra !

I had similar thoughts on a new Strat, and recently placed an order with the Custom Shop for what is basically an Am Dlx S-S-S with an ebony board (and the color I wanted and a few minor tweaks). Compared to, say, CS relics, the price was quite reasonable. If your budget can swing it, it's a great option.

As far as I know, no other current production Strats have ebony boards.

Good input. Yes, I have considered a used one but I prefer new. Also, I did get a quote from the custom shop on essentially duplicating my 1991 Strat Ultra but with a hard tail bridge. The quote was very very reasonable and affordable. I will probably order it.

The Strat American Deluxe came so close and Fender has such variety in their extensive Strat line I just wanted to make sure that I was not overlooking anything.

Yes, on one poster's comments ... what I want is bascially an Amer Deluxe with an ebony board and more vintage sounding pickups that "hot" ones purposed for heavy distortion rock. It is interesting to note that of all of the strats even from the custom shop guitars seen on Fender retailer website galleries ebony is not an option except on the HSS QMT/FMT Amer. Deluxe.

And, the Ultra is the only Strat that has alder capped both front and back with maple .. a reissue would be nice, but prices on EBay would not suggest the Ultra would be a high demand item.

Thanks again,

Peter :)

How does the strat sound with the Ebony fretboard? I personally think that would look amazing... maybe one with no dot inlays, and just all black fretboard could look good...

To answer your question, GREAT! I am not a tone "gourmet" but I am told ( and my ears would agree ) that ebony produces a brighter sound than rosewood. Plus the ebony fretboard is a faster playing action. And maple caps front and back also make the sound very crisp and clear. i prefer the guitar to be clean and look to the amp or pedals when I need distortion for those genres where it fits. The other part of your question, yes , my Ultra just has dot inlays on the ebony which , to me , is an elegant look. If you are interested I am happy to send you a pic of my axe if you want to see the dot markers ( irridescent ) on ebony. Thanks for your posting.
