Hi,

I picked up a used Mexican strat recently (its from 1996). It had a replaced pickguard and tone controls etc. My question is, how do I tell if the pickups are stock or not?
I can't test it out because I bought it when I moved abroad 3 weeks ago, I wasn't willing to ship my amp over for one year.
The guys in the store were'nt sure. I was just wondering if there was a way of checking them like a serial number or something similar.

Any help appreciated.

You would have to loosen or remove the strings and take the pick guard off and take a close up pic then post it here. Alot of the Fender pickups have a number on the bottom. You could also measure the resistance of the pickups. A picture of the top of the pickups showing the magnets is also helpful so we can see the magnet stagger and if they are beveled.

With out doing that there really is no way to know what you may have.

Thanks for the help Maxoom, will check that out.

Needless to say the attitude of that other clown hasn't gotten him far.

Sorry I am not sure. I am sure once you take off the pickguard, you will be able to tell. I know my Dimarzio in my bridge position says it is a Dimarzio. As Maxoom stated, my other stock pickups have a number on them. Do not get upset if the pickups are not stock. If someone went through the hassel of modding the pickguard and accessaries, I would not expect stock pick ups.

I know you stated you moved abroad, have you found a music store that sells amplifiers? Plug it in and see how it sounds.

I just went through the same thing I bought a used strat. It needed some wiring attention so I wanted to know what pickups were in it and after doing some research I found out it had Lindy Fralin pickups neck and bridge and a stock fender in the middle. I really like them so I lucked out.

Thanks for the help lads (RK, Maxoom)

I'll take the pickguard off today and see what's going on. A set of Lindy Fralin's would be sweet!
