I have Bare Knuckle Pickups "Mother's Milk" set on EJ Signature Strat. BKP Apache set coming onto my '54 replica Strat.

For '57 Strat I have been looking for Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s.

I've been wanting to put these in one of my strats. What would you say... better with alder or ash body?

How well does that HB handle the heavier stuff?

I run Super Distortions in both my Strats and I love 'em. I play a lot of old NWOBHM stuff along with 80's metal. Basically anything Lynch, Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, Gilbert, Dio, etc. you get the idea. Also the early thrash metal that was released then. They are a great all around pickup at a good price.

I can play Metallica without a problem, of course that has more to do with my stomp boxes, amp, and playing style, but since I changed pickups in the bridge, it sounds more crunchy. I play 80-90's Metal, old school Thrash, Late 60-70's rock, and Blues without any issues. This is the same type of pick-up you can hear on the earlier Maiden and Kiss music. Goto Dimarzio.com and they can help you find the right pickup for you. Some of the pickups have sample tracks. Also look at EMG, Seymour Duncan, Lace, and Lindy Fralin. Fender also makes humbucking pickups, I like the sound of the stock pickups of the Fender guitars as well.

Forgot to mention that I mainly play rhythm. I do some leads, but I am not that good at it.

Fender Custom Shop Custom 54's in my '04 Classic Strat.
Great pickups. More low end than a 57/62 and still chimey. The very reason I own Strats.

Seymour Duncan SSL-1's in my '89 American Standard Strat.
Put these in because I just didn't like the sound of the stock ones. Maybe it was the plastic bobbin they used, flat pole pieces, etc.

After installing and reinstalling the stock , the CS54's and SD's in both of the Stratocasters I own, I've come to the conclusion that the Custom Shop 54's sound the best. The CS54's have a little more treble and greater detail than the SD's, and a fuller sound than the stock ones in both guitars.

Fender Custom Shop '69's. I like the thumpiness in the bass on the neck pickup, and the quackiness on the other settings. Sometimes I swap out the bridge with a Dimarzio Super Distortion.

If you're looking for a fatter but still vintage sound try Copperhead '59s. They're wound in Canada and sound similar to the CS Fat 50's. I do prefer the sound of the Copperheads to the CS model. The guy who winds them will also work with you to build the exact pup you want. He's relatively cheap, communicates quickly, and does excellent work. He also offers a 30 day unlimited warranty. That what I've got in my '98 Amer. Std. In my '08 Amer. Dlx. I've got the stock SCNs which I also love. Its worth a check of his website to see what he offers and to listen to the sound clips.
www.copperheadpickups.com/

Here's another site that has been posted several times that you might want to check out for sound clips aswell.

Hope this helps.
