If you like the strat style get a MIM standard. If money is really an issue look for a good used one. Just play a lot of them and find one that "feels" right for you.

Best of luck and be sure to keep us posted AND send pics of your purchase

My advise to you is to go out and play as many guitars in your price range. Pick the one you like the best. I like Stratocasters. I am comng around to Telecasters. Good luck on your search. As I do not know what kind of music you want to play, I cannot steer you in the right direction.

If your budget is small start with a used squier or something equal...The squier im sure has been the starting guitar for the majority of recent new guitar players...
As far as what to learn.I teach guitar in my spar time..I always start my students out with the open G,C,D and A chords..With those four chords there is many popular songs you can learn..Songs is what keeps a new guitar player interested theory can come later...But remember theory must be learned to become a complete guitar player...But with that said go to Chordie.com and with those 4 chords you will be able to find all kinds of songs you can play ..Just go there and click on beginner or easy songs this is where i direct my students ..
