James, I'm so glad you started a thread with your extraordinary creation. When I saw your original pictures on the Strat pics thread, I wanted to make a new thread to recognize your guitar. But I wasn't comfortable doing so without your permission. Thanks for giving us reason to celebrate your creativity. 8)

Loved your video - I thought those frets were tooth picks. I'm always fooling around with tooth picks on my guitars (not to replace frets though!). Keep up with the good work!

further proof that if you wanna play guitar bad enough, NOTHING will stop you!!

I see the frets are glued on toothpicks, that's........kinda scary actually, lol. :D

I give you mad credit though for being a clearly insane person. (<---kids in the hall reference)

Good Lord, it actually plays!

That is double-superb!

Man, I just can't wait to see what you make next, perhaps with some slightly more upmarket materials. Now I'm absolutely serious - watch out, Custom Shop! A star in the making...

(And thanks for the link, russianracehorse.)

Cheers - C

What country are you in, James?

Well, somebody was right. I'm from Poland. Thanks for nice words! People on polish forums often laugh or are malignant, but You people are great!. Well, I didn't make this guitar because I'm poor. Everything is about my parents. If they bought me a real guitar, I'd have to learn at music school or practice regularly. I wanted to be independent, so I decided to make my own Stratocaster. I based on Eric Clapton's BLACKIE and it really looks like relic. Well, the pickup are 6 nails with wire around and neodymium magnets underneath (from cell phones earphones ;). And you were right about frets. These are toothpicks :D. And there's one more thing what the building of guitar is worthy of - SATISFACTION. Greetings 4 u!

You can harness that gift you have James if you want to and build more babies for the world.

Right - I agree with VP. You, my friend, should study guitar building with a luthier.

Well, actually, I'd like to be a filmmaker:

But maybe... Well, I'm just seventeen and I prefer being a musician and this guitar just help me to fulfil my dream - play Clapton's DVD and accompany him. The next step is to get his autograph on the pickguard ;P

Toothpicks for frets!

Well, I guess someday you could remove the toothpicks and install some real fretwire!

Well, I was bulding it from October to Christams last year. But not all the time. There were weeks when I was too lazy to do anything. And then I was watching the awesome relic guitars at themusiczoo.com and starting again.
And well, I probably won't change frets. I'll just buy an original Fender when I will be able to afford it. But this "hewercaster" is gonna be always my favourite guitar :D

James
this is similar to how masterbuilder Yuriy Shishkov started out. He couldnt get to handle western guitars in his youth (in one of the former ussr states). He copied pictures of guitars he saw in smuggled in magazines. His cellar was so small he had to open the door to fit necks. It was so damp he had to put bricks down in the winter to keep his feet out of freezing puddles. He got to america and started work for washburn on quality control. He kept going to the washburn bosses with drawings of improved designs to their guitars. They eventually promoted him to their equivilent of customshop, where he built guitars for diamond darrel amongst others. Despite not knowing more than a few words of english.
Examples of his work here.
