I gotta tell you something. I've been practicing hard with my American Vintage 62 which I recently acquired. I plug it into my POD X3 and practice through headphones. While I'm practicing I've been hearing a shaking and vibrating sound. Thinking someone is knocking at my door I take off the headphones and put down the guitar and look but there is nobody there.

So I continue and I still hear this rumbling, vibrating sound while I play. I stop for a few seconds and now it's quiet. I start playing again and it comes back. I stop and it's quiet.

It turns out that the body of my guitar is resting on the armrest of the chair and the vibrations are transferring from the guitar to the chair! So when I play my chair is shaking!

Now that's resonance!

In the 19th century classical guitarists would rest the lower bout of the guitar on a small table to take advantage of that effect... it amplifies the sound quite noticeably if you try it with an acoustic.

I guess that means you have a... wait for it... rockin' chair.

Damn, where's that "boom, tish" emoticon..

My chair has been know to vibrate from time to time.

I guess I could blame it on the guitar

Armless chairs are best for playing.

Well really!

Hi 357mag: I have a sofa that has the same property, particularly on the open A string. Nice!

BTW: have you tried resting your headstock against a speaker cab with the gain cranked? Interesting noises to be found that way...

Cheers - C

Sympathies. In the house before this one, there was a plaster wall with built-in bookshelf "tuned" to A110. It would make you nuts at certain times when the stereo or guittar amp got it going.

I had a overhead light once that would dim every time i did a bend above the 12th fret with the high e string..I changed the lightbulb to one of those low energy curly light bulbs and it stopped doing it..Which upset me so i changed the lightbulb back to a standard lightbulb but the light still wont dim like it used to....Im not sure what caused this but i wish i would have left it alone as it was fun to screw with people after coming home from the bar...

I would guess the filament on the old bulb was ready to go, and the high pitched vibration was stressing it, no scientific fact here, but just trying to look clever.

Seriously though, I used to have an old wooden chair that I would rest the headstock of an old guitar against so i could practice unamplified, but still hear it clearly, when other people were asleep. Obviously I was playing soft stuff, like fingerstyle, and you want to avoid rustling the guitar about and banging it against the surface.

Can you see if the seat of the chair is a two or three piece? Maybe if you turn it over, you can see the glue joints. There are hardly any one piece seats anymore. You might be able to contact the manufacturer and have them custom make you one. Ask them for a thin nitro finish for sure.
