Fender 80s MIA reissue axes are a hot ticket right now.

£500 avg in England. Dunno how that translates to Oz. The rarity of american strats and the higher new price can only increase the price of your guitar. Hopefully Mondo and Blertes will chime in. If your lucky Vinnypop may offer his rather unique opinion too.

heh... yeah, '62 RI Strats from the late '80s to early '90s are hot right now. Or at least expensive... I don't know how many are being shifted at their asking prices. Prices in dealers' windows (and their online portals) are AUD $3,000 give or take a couple of hundred (mostly give). Ebay prices after a good bout of haggling are probably more between $2,000 and $2,500. From what I can see, they're climbing in price like the Dan Smith-era Strats have done over the past couple of years.

Anyway, that's what I can tell you from swinging by the shops yesterday afternoon and taking a squizz. A Candy Apple red '62 RI from 1989 (I think) with some honest playing wear and a few dings was on offer for $3,295. A dealer would probably tell you that they could get you $2,500 or so if you sold through them, but I can't say with utter certainty.

Here's a '57 RI 1988 "Blackie" with a pretty high asking price. Sydney prices do tend to be higher than other capital cities.

My sentiments exactly. In NZ prices are slightly lower. I compare it to a early SRV I spotted on trademe.co.nz for about $2k, the seller stated and verified it was one of the brazilian rosewood models and he could have got more for it. I understand MIJ strats are a common sight on ebay over there, which will help with it;'s desirability. Needless to say, an Am. re-issue of that era are a good buy. you won't loose any money on it if you keep it in its current condition. $3k- 3,5K NZ.

Mondo- have your seen that Ultra on ebay.com.au listed in sydney at AU $1200?

yes, Blertles, I've been following it... Peter.K mentioned it as well. Looks much like yours, eh?

As I said elsewhere, someone could snap that up, take some better pics and put it straight back up for a tidy profit. I think that the Ultra's time is yet to come, though... up until now, not many have been available compared to other models because they've always been worth more to players as a reliable gigging guitar than they could get for them on the second hand market. When they do come up, it's almost as if people don't quite know what to do with them... how much they should ask, who the target market would be, etc, etc. Yet they have so many features that were a direct influence on the Deluxe Strats of today, and they are packed full of awesome... heh. Give it five or six years, I reckon, and we'll still be turning people down, but for greater sums... :D

(and yes... lots of MIJ and CIJ reissues around here at the moment. Some very beautiful ones, too, and people appear to be using their discernment when buying rather than believing any hype... it seems to be an honest and realistic market for those right now. It'd be a great time for a bit of wheeling and dealing... if only... heh)

[edit] man.. 30 min to go on that auction. $1252 so far. I get the feeling someone's bagging a real bargain... ah, well. Good luck to 'em! :)

My '89, with case, is worth at least 2300, mostly due to the fact that is one of the first produced in Ocean Turquoise.

what color is yours, and could you post some pics?

The big thing with those old reissues is whether it was made at the Corona plant or the Fullerton plant. Fullterton reissues are the most collectible.

I bought a red sunburst '62 strat RI the first year they made them (I think). Anyway, to the best of my very limited knowlege, the '57 & '62 were the only Fender RI out at the time & in only one coler for each year.

My questions are: What year did Fender start up the RIs & where were they made? I am trying to determine the value. I paid around $700 & got a tweed case for another$100.
