So my strat project is pretty much done. But I got one idea floating around in my head. The body has alot of little dings on it. Only a couple to the wood but alot of dings. I was wondering if I could do a light relicing. Just a couple of chips maybe a extra ding or two. I dont want to take a belt sander to it I just dont care for the dings not going thru to the wood. Id rather see dings to the wood that little dings in the paint. Ill post some pics to help yall understand what im talkin about.

The tele looks like someone with a blowtorch mistook it for a creme brulée, so I guess you must mean the more tasteful relic job above it. The discolouration of the pickguard is probably intended to simulate years of playing in smoky clubs, and may have been achieved with a bit of boot polish or tea — the relic people resort to all sorts of methods to age finishes prematurely... whatever works! I imagine they've picked up a lot of techniques from film set dressers, as they've been at the artificial decay business for a while.

I think it may be a bit tough to replicate that look with your guitar, as it appears to have a poly finish. That makes it more likely that chips will be large and take off all the underlying layers at the same time, leaving you with freshly exposed wood that won't look like it's weathered over time. You need to be able to make scratches, dings and pitting of varying depths and give them a patina of grime that looks as if it was deposited over a long period and resisted attempts to be cleaned up.

those guitars look sweet, (well except the Tele obviously), reminds me of my own banged up sea foam green strat.

I gotta wonder if just leaving a white pickguard in direct sunlight for a week would yellow it?

Don't really know anything about the relic'ing process, I imagine steel wool and sandpaper on the finish might work.

Mine seem to relic themselves so I don't know how to do it artificially, lol. :D

How did those dings get in there I like the off white finish, were they dings or has the paint just dropped off ?

Its surf green, and I dont know how they got there. Some were chips that flaked off and some were straight to the wood.

Nor do I and apparently, I never will. That Tele is nothing but an out and out disgrace.

I'm of the same mind.

If I could get that Tele cheap enough, I would. Just to see if i could restore it.

I agree, callen3615. Leave it as is and let the chips fall where they may, so to speak. 8)

At the very least, you'd be giving it its dignity back. Frankly, I don't think I'd want to look at it or even know I had it lying around.

Like I've said several times before, I cannot fathom such deliberate and utter mutilation of a fine instrument where not only the 'artist' (read, "abortionist") and probably hundreds of thousands of players consider this tasteful and desirable. And forget all this, "mojo" BS. There has got to be some short circuiting in those who encourage this kind of wanton desecration as some sort of twisted substitute for experience in playing and for others to perceive it as so.

As always, this is merely my opinion, Others' mileage may vary.
