Well, I think this kind of repair is well within the capabilities of an amateur. It doesn't take very long to develop a basic proficiency with a soldering iron. The worst thing you can do is overheat some component. So before you do anything you should go online and find a basic guide to soldering. Even the most basic guide should mention this potential problem and how you can use a heat sink to do the job safely. Or if you are quick enough you could do without. Practice on scrap materials before you try it for real.
