Anybody want to comment on why Richards doesnt get credit like lots of other guitarists?

Hi Jay: Keef is widely credited with starting the whole "relic" thing. He had the Custom Shop build him a replica of his '50s Tele, which was considered too valuable to take on the road anymore. However, when he took delivery of it he said it was fine but didn't have the worn in feel of the original. History records him as asking; "could you bash it up a bit, please?"

So we have the old coconut hunter to thank/blame for the look of untold thousands of guitars. Enough credit for any man...

Cheers - C

PS Speaking of old Teles, has Bruce Springsteen been mentioned on this thread yet? Not exactly great as a player, but surely a great who plays...

Ah...Kirk Hammit did an still plays Fender guitars. He also had quite the Fender collection as well. Watch who you put on here. I posted Alex Lifeson from Rush and got into a battle...even though he plays exclusive to Gibson now and he admitted to using a Fender/Gibson hybrid guitar(s) in the Eighties (actually had 4 of them customized). (lol)

Sure. But then everybody's played everything at some point in their lives. Jimmy Page recorded his most famous solo on a Tele - but sure as heck he's a Les Paul player in all our minds.

This thread can only be about the guitar we most associate with a given player.

Regarding which: has Joe Bonamassa been named yet? We've all seen him play Strats and Teles - but he is very clear that he is primarily a Les Paul guy...

Cheers - C

My point exactly... Check back on the thread and see some of my responces. You have to play a guitar to know whether or not you want to use it.

KR has a Mary Kaye Strat that he used a lot on the Bridges to Babylon tour (played it on, I believe, Miss You) and during the Hail! Hail! Rock'n'Roll sessions.

I'm a Stones geek. Sorry.

True, but you must admit that KR is not a "Strat" guy. He's a "Tele" guy. Im sure he owns or has played many Strats, LPs, SGs, et al. But his Tele will get buried with him.

Chances are he'll outlive the Tele.

I think Keef has successfully pickled himself. He prematurely aged himself, but then has been in a holding pattern for 30 years.

He has worn out plenty of guitars. In fact the genesis of reliccing can be traced back to him.

He had worn out his stage Tele's, and got fender to build him replicas, among the earliest CS jobs. (I have heard the first real CS commission was a tele for Elliot Easton of the cars, but no idea if this is true,)

Anyway richards said he didn't like playing the shiny new axes on stage, and asked them to beat them up and age them for him.

I've seen a lot of names of guys I've seen play Strats listed as non-Strat Players--Page mostly played Teles, Les Pauls, & Danos in addition to various acoustic guitars & mandolins, etc.

But he did play a Strat now & then.
So did Zappa.

And others on this list.

And Hendrix, Clapton and SRV have played Gibsons.

Hmm.

Don't get a Strat because your favorite guitarists uses one.
Get a Strat because you like it, then get a Les Paul or a whatever.
