I have a Line 6 UX1 havent used it much but yeah you can plug 2 mic jacks and a guitar straight into it, might be worth investigating, theres also amplitube, peavey revalver and Guitar Rig 3, probably just scratched the surface, but besides a USB interface there are some options for you.

Cheers

Check out Reaper. Great DAW for about $50 or $60. Frequent updates. Small footprint. Good forum.

I believe you will need to first interface between your guitar and the computer. Dont plug straight into your computer.

I recently bought a device from Tascam called a US-122 midi-interface. It provides for two guitar inputs and two microphone inputs, provides for input and output levels, and renders it all into a single USB line-out to plug into your computer. Its powered via the USB. The US 122 cost me under $100.

You will need software too. The US-122 comes with software that provides basic production board capability.

But you will also need additional software. I use an Apple WorkBook Pro that comes with software called GarageBand. GarageBand is designed to record multiple tracks of music and produce your own songs. It provides some basic pre-set amplifier settings and you can set up back-tracks and loops to play against.....keyboards, drums, base, etc. You can produce your own music and then burn to a CD. Its pretty cool.

I also just downloaded a program called Amplitude Fender from IK Media. It is software that mirrors many different classic Fender amps...Ever want to play through a '59 Bassman? This software provides a preset that allows you to make those sounds.

You should talke to SlapChop on these threads. He is the production equipement and technology guru on these boards.

I tink this is the set up that someone was showing me..I know the garage band program was part of it..Thanks for the suggestions ..Please keep them coming..I been checking them out..I also have checked out guitar rig 3 it is pretty cool also..Has anyone used the Fender Program or the vox jamvox?

I was just asking this same question a few weeks ago. I ended up getting the M-Audio Fastrack. Works well with Mac.... with the Garageband. I'm getting pretty good tone IMHO. Check out my youtube testing out my new amp's tone. I'm trying to get some classic rock tone. Excuse my foot and sloppy playing.

The M-Audio Fast Track USB interface is on sale for $69.99 at musiciansfriend. They usually sell for $100

I have used the Amplitube Fender and its great. There are two versions. A "lite" version (3 amps, a few effects) and a full version. You can demo the full version for a week for free but you'll need to have the connection between your guitar and computer before you use it.
I would recommend the Stealth Plug (which you can buy with the lite version). Its a 1/4 jack at one end and a USB at the other and works very well.

For recording software (being new to the game) I would recomend Riffworks. Its a loop based sequencer so I found it really easy to use. There is a lite demo version of that available as well. If you like it you can buy the full version.

I think the stealth plug with the Fender lite program is $100 from MF

I have an MXL MicMate. It plugs into your USB port and then you attach a standard Mic and mic chord to it. You can use it for vocals or instrument recording depending on the mic you use. It also comes with the software.

You do need an audio interface. I use M Audio Fast Track PRO, Acid Pro, and Native Instruments Guitar Rig. For a less expensive package, get the M Audio USB interface, and the Native Instruments light edition of Guitar Rig 3, or the Peavey Revalver light edition. And you can get Acid Music Studio for around $70. If you're a student, you can get discounts on the Studica.com or Academic Superstore.
Google around a few of these products, and you can get information. If you want MIDI drums, take a look at the EZ Drummer package for around $150.
Hope this helps. Like I said, google around some of these products, and you can get the information you need.
Bottom line is you need the audio interface, the recording software, and the guitar modeling software. And a good pair of headphones and/or monitors.
