Soon I will be making a purchase of my very first Strat. Funds will not allow me to get one of the higher priced models so I have narrowed it down to a MIM Standard or a Highway One. Color will be sunburst with a maple neck that is definate. From what I have read the MIM is pretty much hit or miss to where you can get a good one. As far as the Highway One is concerned I have read that some parts are MIM and the rest in the USA. I am also concerned about the nitro finish durability as opposed to the poly finish. One other consideration is the HSS Highway One, I am confused about the color choice on this one because both Guitar Center and Musicians Friend offer them in sunburst but the Fender spec sheet doe not show it available in sunburst. Opinions appreciated. Thanks. :)

I would recommend getting what you can afford. If you you can afford a Highway 1 strat I would get it. Although, I have a standard strat and can say from personal experience that it is an awesome guitar. I have had mine for a few months and have used it at a few shows.

You should definately get the Highway One Strat. The electronics may be made in Mexico, but it's a high quality hot single coil. Be warned though, it does not have the brittle brightness of a vintage strat coil, and it sounds a bit a like a humbucker, but you'll get a myriad of sounds. The nitro lasts pretty well (unless if you rub the paint on the wall a few hundred times) and it makes the guitar much more lighter in weight and gives it resonance. Comfortable neck and more stable bridge. You should definately get the Highway One over the MIM Standard

i think that you should dump both of them and get a squire affinity series strat instead. i've had mine for 8 years and it still sounds brand new. plus there alot cheaper. :twisted

Go out to several music stores and try out the ones in your price range. Find the one that YOU like best.

Sweet guitars that I wished I owned: Custom Pro, Beck, Clapton, SRV, Knopfler, Hotrod '57, and the list goes on and on. Guitar I can afford: Highway One. I haven't had to change a thing and it sounds sweet, putting my upgrade list (SCN noiseless, Shaler/Fender locking tuners, LSR nut, stainless steel bridge saddles) on hold. Together with my Blues Junior amp, it's a great sounding musical instrument. I did adjust the set up once I got it home and I think that's a good idea with putting 5 springs in the back to stabilize the trem but it's still good for vibrato. The sss Highway One is versatile, it has a fat blues tone in neck-mid and bridge-mid, especially with the treble on the Blues Junior rolled back to 5 1/2 and mid and bass at 11, but the Highway One also does the bell tones with treble turned up and gain down. Sustain is good. It's got a stainless steel block in the bridge and the big headstock and that probably helps.

You shouldn't get the Squier Affinity Strat. I've had bad experiences with them. And plus, why not get a real Fender? The bridges on the Affinity Strats that I have used were awful. If I floated them, they would never stay in tune, and I wasn't too crazy about the sound either. But if it suits you...

I'd go for the Highway One. Its just a personal preference, but I think nitrocellulose is so much nicer. Like a real paint job, whereas the poly finish makes a guitar feel like plastic or something. Plus I think that big headstock looks pretty cool. Its up to you though, try 'em both out and see what you think.
