Am thinking of learning how to customise pickup wiring myself. Has anyone ever done this. Like wrapping more wire to achieve different sounds till you find something which is really you...anyone tried this before with success or did you destroy the pickup ? Im NOT a cheap skate just seeing if I can GET WHAT I WANT when I WANT IT ok thanks.

Yeah, it can be done. In fact Stewart MacDonald sell parts and tools to build your own pickups if you want.

hahahaah hoppy and ceri that sounds fantastic the Vinny Pop Pup HIGH POWERED sound for your strat. I saw the winding machine it costs about 350 .00 dollars US, its only a little motorised box. Couldnt you convert a speed drill to do the job hmmmmmmmm ? dont want to spend that much on a macvhine , how long does it take to do by hand ?

Ha! Well, on that: Bill Bryson tells us that Australia has nine of the world's ten most venomous creatures. Or to put it another way (he says), Australia has nine of the world's nine most venomous creatures.

So this should definitely be called the VinnyPup Venom I pickup. The bite of the outback!

Cheers - C

I seen a picture somewhere where someone was using the backend of a sewing machine to spin the pickup to wind it. Don't know if you got a sewing machine around though lol.

Yes, people do that. Orvilleowner, for one.

Trouble is, you can't count how many winds you did. So Orville used a meter to measure the output every so often and stopped when it reached the level he wanted.

I'd need to know I was going to wind plenty of pickups before I invested in that Schatten winding machine...

Cheers - C

I just think to actually make your own pic up and then see if it works in a guitar would be awesome and make you feel like you have invented your own wheel. Imagine the feeling you would get if it sounded as good as Fenders twaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa snorts loudly like a pig

Our Vin dont have to worry about poisonous creatures. He's got his own electric forcefield. Its like an inbuilt electric fence.

Vin for great info on pickups look at the Bill Lawrence site. Pay attention to the writings on eddy currents.
http://www.billlawrence.com/Pages/Pickupology/Contents.htm

As well as deadliest creatures Oz is home to some of the finest pickups. Well Hank Marvin thinks so.

I have never found any technical info on how to achieve a particular sound with winding. There is only general info like more winds result in hotter but more midrangey response.

Im sure a lot of this is a closely guarded secret, but it sure would be nice for someone who knows what they are doing to publish a pickup winding Cookbook.
