The guys starting out today do have it easy. Even most of the low end guitars play nice. Lots of choices too for first instruments. .

Absolute truth. In my 24 years of playing i can see the change. The amount of quality guitars around these days is staggering, and people run em down. 24 years ago owning a squire strat in england as a 13 year old kid was a humungous deal. Finding a squire that you may aspire to afford one day was a big enough acheivement. What would i have given to start out on a starcaster or yamaha pacifica. Never mind the plethoria of superb free instruction, tips on maintainance and availability of spare parts that are available these days. When i started the nearest place to buy strings was 23 miles away. It took me 5 years to stop winding the whole amount of excess string on the peg so when the ball end broke off i had string spare to tie it back on with. Simply because it was a once every 6 months trip to where the guitar shop was.

Oh man, this is so true. When I was a kid (12 - 16 -ish, I mean) I worked six nights a week after school to put together the pennies to buy budget brand gear second hand. And in those days you had to double-check everything before paying because quality control was so variable.

Nowadays you can order at any price point over the internet and feel horribly aggrieved if the nut ain't quite perfect on a guitar that costs ten hours wages.

Times ain't so bad.

Anyhow:

It's funny, people think guitars are expensive but will plunk down a buck for a pint of water of $4 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks and not even think twice about it.

Going to Starbucks for coffee is like going to prison for sex. You know you're going to get it, but it's going to be rough...

Let just hope thet every time Ben Bernanke comes forward and says
Quote ( I think the economy is going to start getting better) That others don't start thinking of raising prices just like the fuel companies   Could not use better words. Thank goodness it was only 567,000 new people filed for unemployment last week. Imagine if the work week was more then five days it could look bad.
