Based on this sites instrument dater it was made in 1980. S= signature series, E=eighty, 0 = well 0 zero.

Its either not a knopfler or the serial numbering system doesnt apply to it.
I'd email Customer services about it

A picture would be nice though, everyone knows the red ones are the best.

Go into Products and find the guitar. Year of introduction is generally found on the specs page at the bottom.

Unfortunately we can't seem to say the same for those early Claptons.

Doc i'm sure fender are doing it just to confuse future archaeologists. Can you imagine them trying to date neckplates in ten thousand years time. All that effort their going to put into deciphering how various decal digits have marked the fosilized maple. Working out what shapes denote what digits, cos numbering and lettering will have likely changed. Only to be finaly confronted with a serial system devised by the mad author of the necronomicon Abdul Ahazred. The madness of Nyarlathotep will likely be nothing on said archaeologist after a few years work.

[quote="nikininja"]Doc i'm sure fender are doing it just to confuse future archaeologists.

I wonder if Frantic understood that he had an '89 neck end stamp and an SE8# on the headstock prior to your observation. I pointed this out to ME on the two separate threads dealing with this Clapton business.....again....

I've also put the question as to whether or not it was the company's original intent to designate this model as a specific class denoted by the number '87S'....as in '57RI....wherein the date of manufacture of the neck
is considered apart from the actual guitar's serial number. However, THAT number should correspond to the year of assembly. Hence...SE8, SE9, SN, as we've come to know the signature series by.

It is regrettable that there will be no Rosetta Stone to assist the efforts of the future as it appears that it can't even be done in the present. :?

No problem at all Cliff, as always i'm glad to help. Atleast one thing is cleared up now. Knop strats serial no's dont follow any chronological order that normal people can figure out.

Ok nows time for someone to explain the numbering process and make me look thick.
