What kind of amp will you be playing through? I am partial to Boss (back when I used FX pedals). People say that the Ibanez tube screamer being released today cannot compare to the original ones from the 70s.

I'd suggest the tubescreamer. I hear people say it is more responsive and has a personality that is very unique.

You have to hear both as best as you can and decide, as that is what everyone will tell you.

tubescreamer ts9 or the original 808. Thats your first step behind any sound search. that will give the intro in your way to search your own tone.
(and of course the amp too)

I am partial to Boss and for Solid State Amps they kick butt. Personnaly I'd get the Blues Driver. But, if you have a tube amp or are planning on getting a tube amp, I would recommend the Tube Screemer. I would play both through an amp much like the one you have now and see which one you like better.

I have an early 80s Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal. For some reason that one has a different tone than the current DS-1 pedals. The early 80s has a warmer more transparent sound. I also have a TS-9 and it sounds great.

The MXR Classic Distortion a creamy, transparent sounding distortion, like a modified TS-9.

Here is a demo of them here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwtaiO-eETs

Thanks for the feedback guys. Im leaning more towards the boss because I don't see myself in a financial position to get a tube amp any time soon.

Try to play all kinds of pedals before actually paying for one. Good luck. Let us know what you finally get.

Cool, someone else who knows the great combination of Boss & solid state amps!
I keep seeing posts on forums about NOT using Boss with solid state--and I wonder why.
I have a Roland JC-60, and my DS-1, DF-2, AW-3, PH-1 & FL-1 sound great through it.

I like the blues driver, and it will get you more of the Clapton Strat tone--at least that's what I'd say from what I hear, but a tube screamer may be better for the Hendrix-y stuff.

If you can, get both, and hook them both up to use either one or both
(Some have probably noticed my list of Boss pedals above includes two distortions--I also have a DOD Classic Tube, and I hook all three up to use one, two, or all three at a time--depends what sound I need.)

Otherwise--if they are available at the same store--test drive both of them side by side. With an amp & guitar as close as possible to your own.

I voted for Ibanez. Not crazy about Boss pedals.

I like these better though.
G2D pedals. Made in NZ.

Is that what a lefty '57 Strat RI looks like? Crazy.

Gotta go with Ibanez given the choices. But you really should try things out before buying. I tried a bunch of pedals before oddly enough going with a Tech 21 Tri od. Sounds crazy to some, but it was perfect for my style and what I wanted to hear. Even chose it over a vintage Maxon. Let your ears decide.

I bought a MXR ZW overdrive pedal at a pawn shop once, only to find that my Digitech X-Series Tone Driver could do everything the MXR could do and more. Don't read into hype, trust your ears.

If you can, save your money and buy a tube amp.

If that's not in the cards, keep your eyes open and play every OD pedal you can find. There are plenty of good ones (my own preference is the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive) that sound just as good as the TS-9 or any other pedal out there.

My own experience with Tubescreamers is that they sound better than the BD-2, which I found to be rather limited in its application.

Most people I know are using the Xotic BB pre. Wouldn't mind having one myself. Maybe later.

The tubescreamer is only of any use in front of a valve amp, and then its not that good. Its a very very overrated pedal with a horrible mid range honk that you just cant dial out. Ok if you want the honk, useless for anything else. The pedals designed to push a valve amp not make a solidstate amp sound like a valve amp. The bluesdriver will do that better though you'll be far better off with a pod or something for what you want.
