Actually when a guy buys a brand new guitar his brand new guitar looks identical to all the thousands of brand new guitars that were sold. So that observation doesn't hold up.

I prefer the mint look. I do not mind a natural worn look, but the Road Worn is too much.

I like the Mint Look.

I deal with the "relic" look when it happens.

Scratch and swirl removing polishing compound can sure help keep them looking shiny and new! Even pickguards can be polished up.

Many players on this forum will probably be in their graves before their guitars look reliced. It takes years and years of moving and use and abuse and unfortunate accidents to make a guitar look like what Fender offers in their Road Worn Series or their Relic Series.

And if you aren't playing in a band and you do all of your guitar playing at home there is very little that will happen to your axe to make it look reliced.

I like both the shiny new look and the old worn look.

I don't really like either one unless it's an old guitar. I don't like fakes. :D :D

I don't want to buy a guitar that's been artificially aged.

the one that has been sticking in my mind lately is the reissue Nocaster that was hanging on the wall of the shop yesterday when i went there. NOS, looks like a 50's nocaster, but brand new.

That said, there was a heavy relic teambuilt CS Strat. I plugged it in, because it was Cs, and man was that a sweet playing axe, i couldn't help but think, if only the finish wasn't F'ed up.(but it did look convincingly aged, it was hanging right beside a Roadworn Tele, and a Roadworn Strat, not even in the same league, especially beside the CS those RW's looked really fake.)

I won't tell anyone not to buy a relic if they like it, but they're not for me.

I don't mind a guitar that's seen its battles, but, I would prefer it to be natural.

that said, I am kind of aching to try make a 'relic' just to see if i could make one look convincing. sort of an acedemic exercise.

Twelvebar soon I will lay a strat body out the back of the house where hopefully some pigeons and rats will $@!& on it as the acid is very good for naturally eating away at the paint and wood and SUPER fast, but first I need to paint the body just a quick job.

Let's say a guy aged 40 buys a brand new Strat now. It could easily take 20 years or more before it looks like a relic. By that time he could easily have contracted cancer, diabetes, AIDS, or any number of other fatal illnesses.

Guitars outlast humans.

Well I just bought my first Strat at the end of May this year. I just turned 65 last week so unless I live to be 100 mine will never look like a relic. Now I hope I live another 20 or more years and by then I'm sure I will probably look like a relic but not my Strat unless I keep banging into things around my house with it. LOL
Oh by the way I am also a Diabetic and have been one for almost 11 years and I don't consider that a fatal disease like the others in your list. Of course if you just don't take care of yourself when you have Diabetes then it can be fatal. :D :D

I have one of each, and I like both. A good relic job is another opportunity for artists to show their skills, and I'm a fan of almost anything that encourages that. If I only had one guitar, It'd be shiny and new... and it would stay that way, judging by how well the Strat I bought in '92 is holding up.

Vinnypop... you should bring the body round to my place; the mynahs and bats can crap all over it instead of Mrs mondo's marble café table. Bat-crap Strats could be the next bowling ball finish or Splat-o-caster... :)

Don't care for store bought relics, but if beat up guitars made me play better I would have torn them up years ago. I think I'll just keep them pretty.
